TAMPA – The Yankees will no longer be spreading the news after losses in The Bronx.
Breaking with another longstanding tradition, the club will stop playing Frank Sinatra’s “Theme From New York, New York” after losses at Yankee Stadium, a team spokesman confirmed on Sunday.
The anthem had previously played after the final out of both wins and losses, but now a rotation of songs will be played after losing efforts.
After Sunday’s 4-0 loss to the Tigers at George M. Steinbrenner Field, Sinatra’s “That’s Life” played over the sound system as fans filed for the exits.
The tradition to play “Theme from New York, New York” began in 1980, according to the New York Times.
Last Friday, the Yankees changed course on an even older tradition when Hal Steinbrenner announced the organization was relaxing its facial hair policy, which had been instituted in 1976.
