Inauguration Day is always on Jan. 20 and has been since the passage of the 20th Amendment in 1933.
However, in years where Inauguration Day falls on a Sunday, the president has a private swearing-in on that day, followed by a public ceremony the following, Jan. 21. That last happened during President Barack Obama’s second inauguration.
The two other times Inauguration Day and MLK Day overlapped were during President Bill Clinton’s second inauguration in 1997 and President Obama’s second inauguration in 2013.
The two holidays are not expected to overlap again until 2053.
