A resurfaced clip of Travis Kelce trying his hand at a ceremonial first pitch has reminded the internet that we can’t be good at everything.
A clip of the Ohio native’s 2023 Opening Day fumble at Progressive Field was brought back into online discussion on Monday (March 30), courtesy of @NetflixSports, as the streamer gets fans pumped for its MLB on Netflix offerings this season.
In the clip from April 7, 2023, the Chiefs tight end is sporting a Cleveland Guardians jersey with his last name and his football number—87—on the back. As Kelce prepares himself on the mound, viewers can hear a broadcaster praising Kelce as “athletic,” deeming him “one of the best tight ends in the NFL.”
After teasing that they “hope” his teammate Patrick Mahomes, who is also a minority owner of the Kansas City Royals, “gave him a few lessons” before the game, the sportscaster soon learns that Kelce’s football prowess does not translate to baseball.
With former Guardians pitcher Shane Bieber—who now plays for the Toronto Blue Jays—at the plate, Kelce’s pitch hit the ground before making it to the plate, bouncing up and nearly hitting Bieber. Kelce immediately ran to give Bieber a hug, as the two appeared to laugh off the moment.
Those in the comments section of Netflix Sports’ TikTok were not the kindest to Kelce, as critics mocked the moment as “embarrassing.”
“You would think these guys would practice before they do this live,” one person quipped.
“stick with the football trav lol,” another added.
“Looked like Taylor threw it. 😳,” one critic wrote, referring to Kelce’s fiance, Taylor Swift.
“still think NFL is harder than MLB?? lol,” another quipped.
While another commenter urged Kelce to “stay” in his “lane,” it looks like he is, as he signed a contract last Monday (March 23) to return for his 14th NFL season.
