The Senate is set to vote Thursday afternoon on Kash Patel’s nomination to be the next FBI director.
Patel advanced through committee amid controversy, both about his truthfulness during his confirmation hearing, which was delayed a week, and a series of firings of top FBI leadership shortly thereafter by the Trump administration.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) pointed to the recent purge at the Justice Department — from prosecutors resigning after facing pressure on how to handle certain cases to FBI agents facing firing over their work related to Jan. 6 cases — when announcing Thursday morning that she would vote against Patel.
The Senate voted 51-47 to invoke cloture earlier Thursday and advance Patel to the full floor.
The vote is set to begin at 1:45 p.m. EST.
