Jonathan McKernan, President Trump’s pick to lead the embattled Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is set to testify Thursday morning before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs.
The former Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) boardman’s nomination came as the CFPB has faced turmoil in recent weeks, following the Office of Management and Budget’s (OMB) order that employees halt their work and OMB Director Russell Vought’s announcement that he would not take the agency’s last drawdown from the Federal Reserve.
If confirmed, McKernan would likely be taking the reins of an agency on the Department of Government Efficiency’s hit list for cuts, after its funding was gutted and its Washington headquarters shut down. The move has sparked a legal battle, with a federal judge ruling earlier this month against DOGE’s moves to oust workers at the consumer watchdog.
The Senate will also hear testimonies from several of Trump’s other economic nominees during the proceeding.
The confirmation hearing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. EST.
