Jenna Bush Hager is not afraid to open up about her marriage on Today — even when it comes to the “train wreck” moments, as her guest host Justin Sylvester phrased it on Tuesday’s (Feb. 18) broadcast.
The hosts both shared personal confessions on the show while discussing if they have ever told a partner they loved them first.
“No, I didn’t say I love you first but I did propose first and he said no,” Bush Hager confessed, much to Sylvester’s surprise.
As Bush Hager recounted it, “When he said, ‘I love you,’ I might have had one or two holiday cocktails and I said, ‘Me too, let’s get married!’”
Her twin sister, Barbara Bush Pierce, was also there for the momentous occasion. “And my sister was dancing with us and she just slowly danced away,” Bush Hager added with a laugh. “She was like, ‘I’ll leave you two to this.’”
Sylvester laughed and commented, “She left the train wreck.”
The Today host has mentioned before that her husband asked her sister for permission to marry her before he officially proposed.
“He knew our bond was so important that if he didn’t go to her first, he would be in trouble,” she said.
The topic came up when Emmy Rossum put her in the hot seat on Today by asking if she would rather save her twin sister or her spouse from a burning building. The question appeared to stump Bush Hager, who paused as she tried to answer tactfully.
“Henry’s watching,” Hoda Kotb reminded her on the show.
“I love my husband, but we’ll have to see,” Bush Hager said at the time.
Today with Hoda & Jenna airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
