Tiger Woods out of Genesis Invitational after mom Kultida’s death

Tiger Woods has backed out of the 2025 Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines as he continues to mourn the death of his mother Kultida Woods last week.

The 15-time major champion announced his mother’s passing last Tuesday, and he did not give a cause of her death. Kultida was 80.

Woods, whose Tiger Woods Foundation is running the tournament for which he serves as the host, explained in a statement on Tuesday that he is not yet ready to return to competition.

“I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready,” Woods, 49, wrote. “I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss.

“Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my Mom’s passing.”

The Genesis Invitational will take place from Thursday through Sunday in San Diego, and has a purse of $20,000.

The tournament was moved from Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades due to the LA fires.

Woods last played on the PGA Tour in July at the British Open.

Kultida was at a Tomorrow’s Golf League match supporting Woods two weeks before her death.

Woods and Rory McIlroy founded the new league, which combines advanced technology with teams of top players from the Tour for two-hour weekly competitions.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I want to share that my dear mother, Kultida Woods, passed away early this morning,” Woods wrote in a statement last Tuesday. “My Mom was a force of nature all her own, her spirit was simply undeniable. She was quick with the needle and a laugh. She was my biggest fan, greatest supporter, without her none of my personal achievements would have been possible.

“She was loved by so many,  but especially by her two grandchildren, Sam and Charlie. Thank you all for your support, prayers and privacy at this difficult time for me and my family. Love you Mom.”
