This Bronx charter school is earning straight A’s throughout the community

As spring break approaches, you might think school is the last thing on the minds of students and families. However, this time of year is when young children begin enrolling in Kindergarten for the upcoming academic year, as well as some current K-12 students, seeking a new learning environment. If you are a family or student in the Bronx looking for a fresh start in your educational journey, we have the perfect school for you.

Meet Nuasin Next Generation Charter School — a leading choice for an education that doesn’t just deliver strong academic results but embraces diversity, a key factor in shaping future leaders and innovators. While many recognize the importance of education in building the future, finding an institution that fosters knowledge, community and personal growth can be challenging. Nuasin stands out as a school that embodies these values and more. The institution reinforces its commitment to these principles by emphasizing, in its mission, the importance of unlocking scholars’ intellectual potential and talents through thought-provoking teachings. This ensures that students not only contribute to their own growth and future but also to the greater community.

A brief history of Nuasin Next Generation Charter School

Nuasin, meaning “the land between,” was coined by the Wappinger Confederacy – Native Americans who inhabited this region – about its location between the Harlem River and an estuary along modern-day Jerome Avenue. The school, founded in the 2009-2010 academic year as Metropolitan Lighthouse Charter School, transitioned to an independently managed charter school in 2021 under the name Nuasin. Since then, the school has thrived, earning a five-year charter renewal with no conditions and securing approval for expansion. In addition to its existing K-8 campus at 180 W. 165th St. and 9-12 campus at 1366 Cromwell Ave., Nuasin is set to expand further with a new K-5 school in District 12 in the Bronx, opening in 2026, beginning with grades K and 1 in its first year.

The foundation of Nuasin: three pillars of excellence

Nuasin is more than just a school housed in two locations — it is built on a strong foundation of three core pillars:

  1. Rigor – Nuasin challenges students to unlock their untapped potential, talents and abilities. This academic rigor does not discourage but strengthens scholars’ confidence, empowering them to achieve their goals.
  2. Self-Advocacy – At Nuasin, student voices are not just welcomed — they are essential. This pillar ensures that students feel seen and heard, equipping them with the skills to advocate for themselves beyond the classroom.
  3. Community – Scholars and their families are not just part of Nuasin but active participants in the broader community. This engagement allows students to be seen, protected, heard, loved, cherished and respected, reinforcing the value of being an involved and responsible citizen. This aspect of community impacts not only the students and families but the staff and educators at Nuasin. Hear what Spanish teacher Nicholas Chevalier had to say about how this pillar is felt in the building:

“Nuasin Next Generation will treat you like family, no matter your diversity, culture, or background. Everyone is able to express themselves clearly and confidently without fear of failure.”

Seeing is believing

If you’re still wondering whether these values truly come to life at Nuasin, the proof is in the results.

Looking at comparative data from 2019 to 2023, Nuasin saw significant growth in proficiency, with English scores increasing by 21% and math scores rising by 26%. These improvements far exceed the gains made within the same timeframe by both the NYC Department of Education (English +5%, math +4%) and District 9 (English +3%, math +2%).

Additionally, 96% of families rely on their school to prepare their children for college, careers, and life beyond high school. At Nuasin, 100% of scholars graduate within four years, and 86% are accepted into and attend four-year institutions of higher education. Notable colleges and universities that Nuasin graduates have attended include NYU, UCLA, Pace University and the University of Georgia.

Beyond the numbers, Kings Kwadjo-Peprah, a current 11th-grade scholar, shared his thoughts on his favorite subject, math:

“My favorite subject is math because numbers help us understand the world. Math at [Nuasin] is very different because they let you do projects that help you understand the subject very well. At my school, everybody in the classroom is allowed to express their ideas.”

Diversity is Key

Nuasin Next Generation Charter School (NNGCS) is proudly led by an African American Executive Director Malik Russell, reflecting our deep commitment to representation and diversity. As an organization, 73% of our full staff and Board of Directors come from diverse backgrounds, ensuring that our leadership and educators reflect the rich cultural identities of the scholars we serve. When scholars are taught by educators who look like them, it boosts academic achievement, fosters self-confidence and reinforces the belief that success is attainable. At NNGCS, we are dedicated to creating an inclusive learning environment where all scholars feel seen, heard, loved, supported and empowered.
