As the country marks four years since the Jan. 6 insurrection, The View looked back on the day of violence and disruption and urged everyone not to forget what took place in the not-so-distant past.
Sunny Hostin, in particular, warned viewers to remember Jan. 6 as one of our country’s worst days as she slammed Republicans for trying to sweep the reality of the insurrection under the rug.
“I think we need to find moral clarity in this country,” Hostin said. “I just remember after Jan. 6 you had someone like Mitch McConnell placing the blame on Jan. 6 where it belonged, squarely on Donald Trump‘s shoulders. And then you started seeing people backtrack that and losing their moral center.”
She continued, “You had Condoleezza Rice, I believe, on this very show, saying, ‘We need to move on from Jan. 6.’”
Hostin was referring to the former Secretary of State’s 2021 appearance on The View, during which she said, “What happened on Jan. 6 was wrong,” but added, “I also know that as a government and as a country, we’ve got to be concerned about the things that are making life hard for Americans and hard for American families.”
On today’s episode, Hostin firmly pushed back on the views of Rice and others trying to move on from Jan. 6.
“I say no. You don’t move on, because Jan. 6 was an atrocity,” she said. “It was one of the worst moments in American history, and when you think about the worst moments in American history — like World War II, like the Holocaust, chattel slavery — we need to never forget because past becomes prologue if you forget and erase.”
While her co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin blamed Democrats for Trump’s second inauguration, noting that President Joe Biden dropped out of the race too late and didn’t give Vice President Kamala Harris enough time to win over voters, she still firmly condemned the events of Jan. 6, echoing Hostin as she told the audience, “I hope the white-washing of Jan. 6 ends. It wasn’t right, it never will be.”
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
