Sunday shows preview: Trump workforce cuts, Ukraine-Russia rhetoric have world on edge

President Trump’s agenda is in full effect with numerous cuts to the federal workforce and Pentagon staff rounding out his objective to slash government spending with a focus on stark reform. One of the most impactful removals was announced Friday evening regarding the firing of Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Charles “CQ” Brown, a four-star general.

Trump nominated Air Force Lt. Gen. Dan “Razin” Caine, a three-star general, to serve as his replacement. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth also removed other key leaders of the armed forces including Navy Admiral Lisa Franchetti and General James Slife.

The shakeup took place amid ongoing peace negotiations for the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will likely address new nominations, the changing defense landscape and the meetings surrounding international conflict during his appearance on Fox News Sunday.

Over the weekend, Hamas returned Israeli hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners as a part of the ceasefire agreement brokered with the help of Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East.

Witkoff will likely address future hopes for stability in the Gaza region, alongside his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin as foreign delegations search for a solution that satisfies both Ukraine and its Eastern European counterpart, during his appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

In the midst of global tensions, Democrats have been waging a legislative war on the home front by battling Trump’s outpour of executive orders in courtrooms, press conferences and on both Congressional floors. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) may discuss recent crackdowns from the Trump administration on Gov. Janet T. Mills (D-Maine) at the White House in addition to Sen. Chuck Schumer’s (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), who both received an inquiry from interim U.S. Attorney for D.C. Ed Martin, during his Sunday appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
