Ohio treasurer backs Ramaswamy's expected run for governor

Ohio Treasurer Robert Sprague is endorsing Vivek Ramaswamy’s still-unannounced bid for governor of the Buckeye State, after speculation that Sprague could mount his own campaign to replace term-limited Gov. Mike DeWine (R).

“I believe @VivekGRamaswamy is the leader we need to lead Ohio forward with a bold vision of conversation reform. Should he run for Governor, he will have my full support!” Sprague said in a message shared to the social platform X.

In an accompanying video, he praised Ramaswamy’s “outsider mentality” and his vision to “create a renaissance in the state of Ohio.”

Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and longshot 2024 presidential candidate, is expected to announce a gubernatorial campaign later this month, as he sees promising signs in recent polling and pre-launch endorsements.

Along with Sprague, Ramaswamy has also pulled in early backing from Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) and Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.).

His team has also brought on some of Vice President Vance’s top political advisers, a strong indicator that he could grab a key endorsement from Vance or President Trump.

Ramaswamy, a top ally to the president, recently departed Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) commission, focused on cutting federal spending, as he readies to run for elected office.

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost (R) was the first major Republican to declare a run for governor, and Sprague had reportedly filed paperwork. Amy Acton, a former Ohio health director, is running on as a Democrat.

Sprague didn’t share his next plans, but The Columbus Dispatch reported that Sprague will try instead for Ohio’s secretary of state.
