Ocasio-Cortez says Adams 'must be removed'

Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) publicly urged New York Mayor Eric Adams (D) to resign on Thursday, echoing previous calls to remove him from leadership following his federal indictment on corruption charges.

“Adams must be removed. The city cannot sustain being governed for nearly a year by a Mayor who is being coerced by Trump admin in order to escape charges,” the lawmaker wrote on the social platform Bluesky.

“This corruption poses a real threat to the people of the city. He should have resigned a while ago, but will not. So it’s time for him to go.”

Her statement comes after the Department of Justice (DOJ) ordered federal prosecutors to dismiss corruption charges against Adams on Monday.

However, Ocasio-Cortez isn’t the only city official calling for his resignation in the wake of criminal accusations.

“New York City deserves a Mayor accountable to the people, not beholden to the President. Mayor Adams should step down,” New York Lt. Gov. Anthony Delgado (D) wrote in a Thursday post on X.

State law would allow Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) to remove Adams upon “charges” or he could resign.

In either case, the city would instate a temporary replacement and then hold a special election within 80 days.

New York primaries for the gubernatorial post are set to take place in June. Adams has named himself as a contender for the role and has not currently indicated any intention to resign.
