The new Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon movie, You’re Cordially Invited—which is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video—comes with a special treat for fans of both the Jonas Brothers and Creed. That’s right, Nick Jonas has a You’re Cordially Invited cameo where he sings Creed’s “With Arms Wide Open.” What a way to be welcomed to this place.
Written and directed by Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Neighbors, Bros), You’re Cordially Invited stars Ferrell as a doting single father who wants to give his only daughter the perfect wedding. Unfortunately, that proves difficult when he finds out the venue was double-booked by Reese Witherspoon, who wants to throw the perfect wedding for her sister. The two parties agree to share the space. As you can imagine, this comes with hurt feelings and complications.
But it’s not complicated for Nick Jonas. Jonas appears about halfway through the film as Pastor Luther, the young, hot minister who’s been hired to marry Witherspoon’s on-screen sister, Neve (Meredith Hagner) to her betrothed, Dixon (Jimmy Tatro). Right away, we get the sense that this is a self-important, “chill vibes” type of guy. He’s the type of guy who, as soon as someone hands him a microphone, he’s going to sing a Creed song.
And that’s exactly what he does. After his obligatory “this is a good-looking crowd” comment, Jonas launches into a quick rendition of Creed’s hit power ballad from 1999, “With Arms Wide Open.”
He only sings a few bars (“Welcome to this place, / I’ll show you everything, / with arms wide open.”) but he still manages to nail lead vocalist Scott Stapp’s signature raspy drawl. Unfortunately, that’s all we get to hear, because shortly after the dock where the ceremony is taking place collapses into the lake. A sopping wet Jonas stomps off, furious, lamenting, “I didn’t get to do my second song!”
Believe me, Nick, we’re disappointed, too. But hey, at least we got this cameo that is specifically for the Venn diagram of people who love both Nick Jonas and Creed. That overlap is bigger than you’d expect.
