Alarming footage captured the moment Mississippi Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann suddenly collapsed on the floor of the state’s Senate chamber Wednesday morning.
The dramatic moment, which was recorded on a livestream of the legislative proceedings, showed the 77-year-old Republican standing on stage at the Senate’s podium when he slowly slumped over into the microphone and fell sideways onto the floor.
The shocking incident sent Hosemann’s colleagues into a panic as they let out audible gasps and called out his name with a few rushing to his aid and requesting emergency services, the video showed.
Senate proceedings were immediately recessed as he received medical attention.
“Thank you all for the kind words and prayers,” Hosemann, who was re-elected to a second term in November 2023, posted to X Wednesday night.
“I was dehydrated and am feeling fine now. I am grateful for Mississippi’s phenomenal medical professionals and am ready to go back to work tomorrow. Lesson learned: Stay hydrated.”
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, along with other state lawmakers, took to social media to send Hosemann, who served as secretary of state from 2008 to 2020, their prayers and wish him a speedy recovery.
“First Lady of Mississippi Elee Reeves and I are praying for Lieutenant Governor Hosemann!” the Magnolia State leader posted on Facebook.
The livestreamed video of the Mississippi Senate has since been deleted — with a clip of the fall later circulating on social media with online spectators questioning the quality of Hosemann’s health.
Discourse over the age of elected officials was amplified earlier this month when Senator Mitch McConnell, 82, was photographed in a wheelchair after suffering multiple falls on Capitol Hill.
