Mets bringing back Pete Alonso is an emotional high the fanbase needs

I can’t shake a thought. To share it, I am going to have to remind you of “Hard Knocks” — 15 years ago.

That was a Jets training camp in which the through line in the episodes was the holdout of Darrelle Revis — the would he or won’t he be signed in time for the season opener. The Jets were losing some buzz of coming off a surprise wild-card run to the AFC Championship game under first-year coach Rex Ryan. The fans were apoplectic that owner Woody Johnson and then GM Mike Tannenbaum could not get one of the best draft picks in team history signed.

Then, as the last episode wound down, Tannenbaum mentioned wanting to try one last concept, and pretty soon there was agreement. Revis the next day was arriving at the Jets complex and coming to the field in civilian clothes as practice was concluding. The ebullience radiated as Revis stuck his hand in with the other players and said, on three, Jets — “One, two three … Jets!” Fade to black.

It was stirring. An emotional high for the organization that elevated the fan base. The Jets went into their season on that wave.
