Meghan Markle thought Vanity Fair cover was about her charity, not Prince Harry

Mistaken Meghan.

Former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter revealed in his new memoir, “When the Going was Good” (out Tuesday), that Meghan Markle misunderstood the purpose of her 2017 cover story with the magazine.

Carter, 75, told Page Six how they tapped Markle, 43, for an interview for one of his last covers before he stepped down in late 2017.

“Jane Sarkin, who booked our covers, came in and said, ‘We should do a cover on Meghan Markle,’” Carter recalled. “I said, ‘I have no idea who that is.’ She said, ‘She’s on ‘Suits.’ I said, ‘I have no idea what that is, why should we do a story on her?’ So she said, ‘Because she’s going to marry Prince Harry.’”

Carter said that during Markle’s interview, she allegedly complained to the reporter about their conversation.

“Excuse me, is this going to all be about Prince Harry? Because I thought we were going to be talking about my charities and my philanthropy,” Markle allegedly said at the time.

Carter raised his eyebrows and told Page Six, “This woman is slightly adrift on the facts and reality.”

The Post has reached out to Markle’s reps for comment.

Markle’s Vanity Fair cover story, titled “She’s Just Wild About Harry,” was published weeks before her engagement to the Duke of Sussex, 40, in Nov. 2017.

Carter was friendly with Markle’s late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, and co-hosted the 1994 party where Diana wore her infamous “revenge dress” in response to then-Prince Charles’ adultery.

The Canadian journalist told Page Six that Diana — who died in 1997 — would be upset over Harry’s estrangement from the rest of the royal family.

“I would think she would feel great sorrow for her son to have been pulled away from his family like this, especially his brother but also his father,” said Carter.

“Anytime someone comes between siblings that’s a disaster, horrible for a family,” he added.

In her Vanity Fair interview, Markle spoke about how she was navigating the massive public reaction to her and Harry’s romance.

“It has its challenges, and it comes in waves—some days it can feel more challenging than others,” she said at the time. “And right out of the gate it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.”

The “Suits” alum added of the relationship, “We’re two people who are really happy and in love. We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception. Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”

Carter previously told the Sunday Times in 2023 that he thinks Markle and Harry’s marriage will last “years rather than decades.”

“I think she has run rings around poor Harry and gotten what she wanted: notoriety, money, and a title. His usefulness to her diminishes daily,” he said.
