Social media has been buzzing about a reported refund that the Mavericks have offered fans who canceled their season tickets after the team traded away superstar Luka Doncic in a shocking three-team deal with the Lakers and Jazz.
Mavericks fans have responded with anger, and some have canceled their season plans, leading the team to offer refunds, ESPN reported.
A fan on social media also said the team offered them a refund.
“As a season ticket holder who canceled, I can confirm this is true,” X user @haleymffl wrote on X.
“We emailed saying we wanted to cancel and listed all of our remaining game tickets for sale. So no, we are not keeping tickets moving forward. I’m not sure if they would offer refunds while also allowing you to have the same season ticket plan next season,” the person wrote in a follow-up post.
Dallas TV station WFAA reported that it had also heard from a season ticket holders who reached out to a ticket rep to cancel their season tickets and would get a refund from the Mavericks.
In a statement to the outlet the Mavericks said, “Regarding refunds, we value every season ticket member relationship and reps are available to take calls from members with any concerns or questions.”
All of this is going in the wake of perhaps one of the biggest trades in recent NBA history that sent Doncic to the Lakers in a deal that included Anthony Davis coming back to Dallas.
Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison is aware of the fan discontent over the trade but seemed to dismiss some of the anger when he addressed reporters on Sunday.
“I’m sorry they’re frustrated, but it’s something that we believe in as an organization,” Harrison said. “It’s going to make us better. We believe that it sets us up to win, not only now, but also in the future. And when we win, I believe the frustration will go away.”
The Mavericks were blown out by the Cavaliers less than 24 hours after the trade.
They followed it up with a 118-116 loss to the Sixers on Tuesday night.
Fans protested outside American Airlines Center on Sunday and Dallas brewery Celestial Beerworks announced that it would be selling a new beer called “Sell the Team” in response to the team’s decision to send Doncic away.
“Dallas, this beer pairs well with our despair and confusion,” part of the can reads, as shown in an image the company posted to social media.
The anger is only expected to continue, with plans for another protest circulating online for Feb. 8.
