It’s been exactly two years since Drew Barrymore and Kate Hudson‘s failed attempt to prank call Luke Wilson — and the actor is finally weighing in.
On Thursday morning’s (Jan. 9) episode of The Drew Barrymore Show — which was pre-empted for former president Jimmy Carter’s funeral — Barrymore remembered the time she and Hudson tried to prank call Luke on-air, but accidentally called someone else with the same name. Luke, who appeared on the daytime talk show to promote his series No Good Deed, said he did hear about the mishap.
“It was very odd because that week I [went] to the coffee shop and people were like, ‘Hey, Drew and Kate were trying to call you.’ And I was like, ‘Drew and Kate who?’ And then they said you guys,” he recalled. “It had a very eighth-grade type feel to it.”
Barrymore suggested they “close the circle” by recording a video for Hudson.
“I don’t appreciate being prank called and neither does the guy that you called,” Luke joked when Barrymore began recording on her phone. “Please call the correct number next time and I’ll definitely answer. We miss you!”
During a January 2023 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Barrymore and Hudson bonded over their romantic history with the Wilson brothers. Barrymore dated Luke from 1996 to 1998, while Hudson dated Owen Wilson from 2006 to 2009.
When they decided to prank call Luke, they quickly realized they were not talking to who they thought they were talking to.
“You looking for the actor? That’s not me,” a man by the name of Lucas Wilson said on the other end of the phone, noting that he was a different actor who appeared in Barrymore’s 1999 rom-com Never Been Kissed.
“I’m so sorry, we’re crank-calling people right now. Hi, it’s Drew. It’s so nice to hear from you. I’m so sorry,” Barrymore said at the time, before promising to call him back to “explain what the hell I’m doing.”
