Impulse buying has nearly gotten the best of most of us — including Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos.
Minutes into Thursday’s Live with Kelly and Mark, Ripa shared some tips on “how to save yourself from buyer’s remorse.” Though Ripa felt she and Consuelos do not tend to shop online “in the middle of the night,” she read that many have taken to “shopping on social media” in the later hours.
“You know how you get, like, a feed of, like, as soon as I see a device that promises to tighten my loose skin, I buy that device,” she said. “I have 30 of them. I’ve used all of them exactly once. Now I don’t know which charger goes with which device.”
After Ripa shared that American adults are spending $71 billion on “impulse buys based on their social media feeds” — often during the night — she took out her readers to take a look at “how we can stop buying.”
“I bought these in the middle of the night,” she quipped of her glasses.
“Reflect” marked the first top Ripa read, which involves “slowing down” and “reflecting on purchases you’ve purchased before.”
“Like, I might ask myself, ‘Do I need this stomach tightening device, when I already have seven stomach tightening devices, where I don’t know where the charges are?’” she added.
Consuelos said he did the same “with a pair of golf shoes.”
“They looked great, they looked comfortable. And then I read the reviews, and I’m like, ‘Oh.’ I reflected,” he recalled.
After suggesting to “use a shopping list,” Ripa noted the tip of “employ[ing] a 24-hour rule,” though she could understand the difficulty surrounding this patience.
“I know, I get it. When I see Emily Ratajkowski putting that gel on her body and it makes her so glowy…” Ripa began explaining, before Consuelos jokingly interjected, “Same.”
Ripa continued, “I have to remind myself that I’m still gonna be my height and my age… Yeah, like as slippery as I’m gonna be, it’s not really gonna do all that.”
After reading that you should “unfollow accounts that fuel your temptation,” Ripa insisted that they just “pop up” in her feed, telling Live EP Michael Gelman that she “click[s] on nothing.”
Consuelos highlighted that “it might know how long you’re looking at it.”
“Like I get tons of stuff of Emily Ra— what’s her name?” he joked. “Ratajkowski. All the time. My whole feed is Emily Ratajkowski.”
Laughing, Ripa replied, “You’re just looking at it too long? Is that what you’re saying?”
Consuelos assured Ripa, “No, I’m joking.”
