Two jokes cut from the same hand.
“Daily Show” host Jon Stewart recalled when an on-set accident left blood “spurting everywhere” just moments after slicing open his hand while smashing a mug in anger at former President Joe Biden.
Stewart, with his index finger wrapped with electrical tape, said that he first “drew blood” in the name of comedy during a 2011 bit with John Oliver involving a margarita blender.
“That was more of an artery,” Stewart said Monday.
In a resurfaced clip from June 2011, Stewart and Oliver reenacted a press conference of then-Congressman Anthony Weiner who had admitted to lying about his infamous sexting scandal a day earlier, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Stewart was behind a podium with a Motel 6 microphone making a margarita when he began punching the base of the mixer and cracked the glass he was holding, effectively cutting himself.
“That’s not good,” Stewart said. “I’m probably gonna need to go to the hospital.”
The clip cut to Oliver behind the podium as Stewart nursed his wound calling attention to the “visibly injured hand.”
“That’s a genuine problem,” Oliver said.
Oliver then invoked a line from Monty Python and the Holy Grail” during the impromptu emergency
“At one point he yells at me, ‘It’s just a flesh wound,’” Stewart said.
Stewart described his former Comedy Central star as gleeful as he suffered from the on-stage mishap.
“We’re back! New Daily Show tonight! It’s a bloody good episode…emphasis on bloody…I’m an idiot…” he said on X.
Stewart retold the original, more bloody, incident during a break in filming Monday’s show as stagehands cleaned up the broken mug and blood from around the desk.
Stewart injured himself at the beginning of Monday’s show when he called for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to focus on the billions in subsidies given to corporations, particularly pharmaceutical companies.
The 62-year-old comedian turned his anger against former President Joe Biden for only cutting the prices of 10 drugs.
In his fake tirade, Stewart grabbed a white mug with the title “World’s Most Dad” – an apparent dig at DOGE leader Elon Musk – before smashing it on his desk, cutting himself in the process.
“F–king thanks! Come on!” he yelled.
The host was left bleeding and needing first aid, telling the crowd he would be visiting the hospital afterward.
“I’ll be going to the hospital soon,” he then joked
After grimacing and looking at the cut, Stewart threw his hand under the desk before bringing it back later in the monologue as audience members gasped at the injury.
“It’s fine,” Stewart yelled at the audience, failing to contain his laughter.
“Daily Show” stagehands frantically cleaned up the mess surrounding Stewart’s desk as he told the crowd the wound was covered up by some “duct tape.”
