Johnson planning meeting with Musk, House Republicans

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said he is going to be planning a meeting with Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)’s leader Elon Musk and House Republicans sometime soon.

Johnson met with Musk at the White House on Tuesday evening. He told reporters on Thursday that he has had multiple conversations with the tech billionaire, who has been tapped to slash federal spending through DOGE.

“We’re trying to figure out logistics, but he’s anxious to share what he’s finding, and a lot of things he’s told me in our private meetings, I said we have to make sure all the members understand the degree of the fraud, waste and abuse and how egregious it is,” Johnson said.

He said he hopes Musk can show lawmakers how hopeful they are about the changes coming to the federal government and told reporters to “stay tuned” on when the meeting would be.

“We’re going to propose some meeting times and dates and then have him over here to explain this to the members,” Johnson said. “So, we’re looking forward to that.”

Musk has become one of Trump’s closest allies and participated in the first Cabinet meeting alongside other department heads on Wednesday. His role in reshaping the federal government is an unprecedented and unelected one and has drawn criticism as DOGE cuts thousands of jobs and gains access to various departments and agencies.

Johnson may also meet with Senate Republicans, who recently aired their concerns about Musk and his aggressive approach with DOGE in a closed-door meeting.

Some complained there is a lack of transparency coming from Musk and are concerned that every day there is a new “surprise” from DOGE. While others support his cuts to federal spending, dividing the caucus.
