Johnson: Democrats ‘doubling and tripling’ down on policies that resulted in ‘big victory’ for GOP

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said he thinks congressional Democrats are “doubling and tripling” down on the policies that resulted in a “big victory” for Republicans in the recent election.

Johnson joined Fox News for “Sunday Night in America with Trey Gowdy,” where he was asked if he thinks Democrats understand why they lost battles for the White House and congressional majorities in 2024. The Speaker said he doesn’t think they do understand.

“They seem to be doubling and tripling down on the failed policies that gave us the big victory last November,” he said.

Johnson argued that Democrats have “no leader” and “no vision” to run on.

“The Democratic Party is flailing. But meanwhile, the Republican Party is sticking together and getting our agenda done,” he said.

The recent government funding battle put a spotlight on the divides within the Democratic Party.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) came under sharp criticism from his fellow Democrats after he voted to advance a GOP-drafted measure to keep the government funded instead of backing a filibuster. The political fallout has left the party in turmoil as many Democrats backed blocking the GOP measure, which would have led to a government shutdown.

Johnson noted that there’s little time for Republicans to achieve what they want, as the prep for the 2026 midterm elections begins.

“We’re gonna let the Democrats do what the Democrats do, but we’re going to get the job done,” he said. “And I think people will see that contrast. It’s on stark display right now that’s for certain.”
