A beloved sports social media personality is stepping away from his accounts amid a worsening turn in his battle with cancer.
Andy Isaac – best known by his social media handle @WorldofIsaac – made the announcement on his X account on Tuesday, making the tough decision and calling the post, “Sadly, this is probably one of my last.”
“Having cancer since 2006 has finally taken its toll on me. It has finally stripped me of quality of life,” he wrote in the sad post. “I have decided on hospice care. Life has been a struggle these last few months and years. I hope I can find some peace in hospice. I may keep a journal of my final days. I’m not sure yet. I’m tired and I’m in pain. I have a horrible foot infection that is preventing me from walking, and I just don’t have the strength to do all the last-minute things I want. But I’ll try.
“I hope I gave you all a positive outlook on life. I hope I made even the smallest impact. Be kind to each other. I love you all. Truly, I do.”
Isaac became a popular figure among sports fans on social media – in particular Detroit fans with his passionate posts about the Pistons, Tigers, Lions, Red Wings and Michigan State sports endearing him to his audience.
He also shared his love of food and his sense of humor through his posts over the years.
The replies to Isaac’s farewell post were a proverbial who’s who in sports with the Lions, Pistons, Tigers and Red Wings all replying to the post along with sports media personalities such as Katie Nolan, former NHLer Aaron Ward and NBC Sports’ Nicole Auerbach.
A thread on a Michigan State message board paid tribute to Isaac.
“Absolutely awful. I really hoped the Lions would win the Super Bowl this year and he could go out “on top,” one person wrote. “***** cancer.”
“One of the funniest and genuinely ‘good’ people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Still holding out hope for him,” another added.
Isaac boasted nearly 90,000 followers on his X account alone.
In a 2019 interview with The Athletic, Isaac said the genesis of his writing had been his diagnosis with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2006 and he started blogging to keep his family and friends up to date.
After he went into remission in 2007, he kept writing and eventually became involved with the culture site Uproxx.
The World of Isaac persona was born around the same time he became involved with the culture site.
“I think that’s how it started, like with a lot of my friends,” Isaac told The Athletic in 2019. “It just slowly built. The World of Isaac is a person who loves Detroit sports, and then kind of evolved into Isaac the person who loves food, the person who did the Faturday hashtag.”
