Using video games to cheat in a marriage is flat out gross. That’s unfortunately what happened to this wife who caught her husband having an online affair with another gamer.
This woman took to the r/relationshipadvice subreddit on Reddit to blast her husband for his messy infidelity and ask people for advice.
“My (27F) husband (28M) is heavily involved in a game in which members role play as characters in a town. There is a discord server where the members voice chat and can type back and forth to each other,” she wrote.
She went on to share that through this game — that her husband spends hours a day playing — he met a few online friends. And he’s become particularly close with one of them — a woman.
“They talk everyday through discord, even when my husband is at work, he will be chatting with her. I know this because I’ve seen these messages. They voice chat (with me in the room) everyday,” the wife wrote.
When she expressed her concerns to her husband, he downplayed his friendship with this woman and assured her there’s nothing to worry about.
Usually when someone says “there’s nothing to worry about” — always proceed with caution.
The wife then found explicit texting conversations between her husband and this mystery woman on his phone. Yikes.
“I told him this ends now or he doesn’t have a wife anymore. I told him if he valued his family this ends and never continues. He said he understood and it won’t,” the woman explained.
Well, that was a false promise from the husband — because he continued to engage in his gaming affair. The wife shared that her husband desires an open relationship — and that was the final straw for her.
Obviously distraught, she and their six-month-old daughter went to stay with her parents.
“I’m terrified to start over, I have exactly 0 money, and all of this is massively embarrassing on top of everything,” the wife vulnerably shared on Reddit.
The thread has almost 300 comments of other Redditors empathizing and validating this woman’s feelings.
“I’m sorry but yes I would consider that cheating. He’s basically sexting with another woman,” one person responded with.
“This is 100% an emotional affair, with (at least) physical role playing. I’m so sorry.”
A fellow gamer shared their input in the thread: “I play video games that sound similar where people role play, in my opinion this is definitely cheating. People get emotionally invested in roleplaying.”
“Yes it’s cheating. He lied and is emotionally cheating. Also, just the amount of time and energy he gives this other woman is cheating without the sex thrown in,” another person added.
