Cory Booker is making headlines for his lengthy filibuster.
The New Jersey senator has been dominating the Senate floor since Monday night (March 31), speaking out against President Donald Trump and cabinet figures like Elon Musk.
According to the Associated Press, Booker, a Democrat, allowed for questions from other Democrats and several other Senators spoke, though he retained ownership of the floor. He also shared letters from that he said he received from constituents, amplifying their concerns.
Per Booker’s YouTube page, he is “speaking as long as he is physically able to lift the voices of Americans who are being harmed and not being heard in this moment of crisis.”
“Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and the administration have shown a complete disregard for the rule of law, the Constitution, and the needs of the American people,” the description continues.
“Senator Booker is laying out the facts of what the administration is doing to hurt America and Americans, and elevating the voices of Americans who are being harmed and who feel like people in Washington aren’t listening,” it adds.
As noted by AP, former South Carolina governor Strom Thurmond holds the record for the longest filibuster in U.S. history, speaking for 24 hours and 18 minutes in opposition of the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
