Cupid’s bow could break your heart.
The most romantic day of the year is right around the corner — but many unsuspecting lovers will be dumped by their beaus before Feb. 14.
The Tuesday before Valentine’s Day, known as “Red Tuesday,” is the most common 24-hour period for break-ups, according to experts, who say the looming holiday prompts people to reassess their romantic relationships.
“Break-ups happen because people don’t want to fake their feelings on Valentine’s Day,” Jessica Leoni, a sex and relationships expert, told the Daily Mail.
“Rather than go through the motions of romance, they’d prefer to be honest – even if it means heartbreak,” the romance pro added.
The affairs website llicitEncounters.com conducted a survey that found a sizable 36% of respondents had dumped a partner in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day.
Of those, 66% decided to call it quits on Red Tuesday.
Among those surveyed, 27 percent said they split with their significant other because they were racked with the guilt of faking affection on Feb. 14.
“Some feel trapped by Valentine’s Day and the expectations that come with it, and rather than putting in effort for a relationship they don’t see lasting, they cut ties instead,’ Leoni explained.
“Ultimately, Red Tuesday has become a day of reckoning for many couples, and it’s no surprise that we see a massive spike in break-ups right before Valentine’s Day.”
Perhaps things could be worse: Married couples may need to be wary of breakups at the kickoff of every year, as post-holidays January has been dubbed “Divorce Month” in legal circles.
