Hannah Berner is once again catching heat for her comedic material.
The comedian and Summer House alum was criticized online for a joke targeting none other than Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce — and UnitedHealthcare CEO murder suspect Luigi Mangione.
“Luigi’s so hot right now,” she teased during Netflix‘s Torching 2024: A Roast of the Year, per Page Six . “Who knew besides Travis Kelce that you could become so popular with women by shooting loads into a billionaire?”
Berner also was slammed for an untimely joke about Blake Lively, who filed a lawsuit against her It Ends With Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni for sexual harassment just days before the roast aired. At the time, Berner took to her Instagram story to note that her joke was “filmed before news of the lawsuit,” and that she “support[s] Blake.” As noted by Page Six, Baldoni has since expressed his plans to sue Lively. Baldoni already sued The New York Times on Dec. 31, 2024 for libel, citing the outlet’s Dec. 21 article, “‘We Can Bury Anyone’: Inside a Hollywood Smear Machine.”
As for Berner’s quip about the starry couple, some deemed it “a bad taste joke” and “just disappointing and not funny.”
“To land an inappropriate joke, it actually needs to have some humor in it,” another added.
However, not everyone took offense to the joke. Others lauded the clip as “hilarious,” “extremely funny” and “pretty clever,” and argued that the “wildly inappropriate” nature of the joke is “kinda the point of the joke.” Another wrote, “Delivery wasn’t great but that’s a solid joke.”
Berner released a Netflix stand-up special, We Ride at Dawn, in July 2024, which earned a STREAM IT from DECIDER contributor Sean L. McCarthy’s We Ride at Dawn review. With respect to her recent roast appearance, she appeared alongside fellow comics including Adam Ray, Ms. Pat, and Sam Morril, as well as the special’s Roastmaster General, Jeff Ross.
