A House Republican is taking action against Democrats who disrupted the censure of Rep. Al Green (D-TX) for heckling President Donald Trump during his address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night.
Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) revealed a resolution that seeks to strip committee assignments from those who stood in the House chamber well and sang “We Shall Overcome” as Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) called on Green to present himself for pronouncement of the censure. Johnson slammed his gavel and called for the House to “come to order” but ultimately announced a recess as the Democrats refused to disperse.

Fox News, which obtained a copy of the resolution, reported that Ogles plans to speak with Johnson about the measure next week and intends to raise it as privileged — a move that would force leadership to act on it within two legislative days.

Citing House rules, the resolution says members “shall behave at all times in a manner that shall reflect creditably on” the lower chamber. It also calls for the House sergeant at arms to provide a list of who participated in the singing disruption within a week of passage so they may be “removed from any standing committee” on which they serve for the rest of the 119th Congress.
“Today, a group of House Democrats broke decorum during the censure of Rep. Al Green and, after multiple warnings, refused to heed [Johnson’s] order,” Ogles said in a post on X, adding later: “If you want to act like a child in the Halls of Congress, you will be treated like a child.”

Minutes into Trump’s address on Tuesday, Green stood and shouted, leading to a pause in the remarks and Johnson demanding that members “uphold and maintain decorum in the House and to cease any further disruptions.” However, Green ignored the warning and yelled, “You have no mandate to cut Medicaid!” — a program that Trump has said he has no intention of touching. Johnson then ordered the House sergeant at arms to remove Green.

On Thursday morning, 10 Democrats joined with 214 Republicans in voting to pass the censure resolution against Green — who has said of his antics at Trump’s speech that he would “do it again.” Two Democrats also voted “present.” The final vote was 224-198-2.
“Today, I voted to censure a fellow member of Congress. When you knowingly break House rules, as Rep. Green did, it shouldn’t be surprising to face consequences,” Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA) said on X. “Congress should respect the co-equal office of the Presidency, regardless of who holds the job, do our constitutional duty, and stop with the theatrics at these events.”
In a post to X, the conservative House Freedom Caucus released a statement from its chairman, Rep. Andy Harris (R-MD), saying the group intends to file a resolution that specifically aims to remove Green’s committee assignments.

“The House Freedom Caucus is filing a resolution to strip disruptive and disrespectful Democrat Rep. Al Green from his committee assignments and we expect [Johnson] to bring it to the House floor for a vote next week,” Harris said. “Green was censured in a bipartisan vote but he needs real consequences to demonstrate that no one gets to disrupt the People’s business in lame attempts to derail President Trump’s agenda.”
