Gene Hackman’s wife Betsy Arakawa ‘hadn’t called’ her mom in months

Gene Hackman’s youngest daughter isn’t the only family member who hadn’t spoken to the actor or his wife, Betsy Arakawa, in the months leading up to their deaths.

Arakawa “hadn’t called” her 91-year-old mother, Yoshie Feaster, who suffers from dementia, since October, according to the elder’s housekeeper, Keiko.

Keiko spoke to Daily Mail on Friday, just two days after Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home, along with a deceased dog.

The housekeeper told the outlet that Feaster, who lives in Hawaii, grew concerned when Arakawa’s regular monthly phone calls stopped.

“Betsy hadn’t called her mother in months. She usually called every one or two months. Last time she called was October. We were thinking, what happened?” she recalled.

Keiko also revealed that authorities informed Feaster of her daughter and son-in-law’s tragic deaths on Wednesday; however, due to her condition, she’s forgotten the devastating news.

“She talked to a New Mexico policeman the other day. But she has dementia so she forgot already. I feel so sorry for her,” the housekeeper, who has been by her side for two decades, shared.

Keiko said her moods change regularly.

“She was very upset,” she recalled of Feaster learning about her daughter’s death. “But right now she’s kind of normal.”

She said that Arakawa, a classical pianist, had no other surviving close relatives besides her mother.

The Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza revealed that Hackman had likely been dead for at least nine days before maintenance workers found the Oscar-winning actor, his wife and one of their German Shepherd dogs passed away in their sprawling home on Wednesday, February 26.

Hackman had a pacemaker that recorded his last “event” on February 17, Mendoza shared during the press conference on Friday.

“According to the pathologist, I think it’s a good assumption that was his last day of life,” he shared while clarifying that police are still putting together a timeline of the events that led to the couple’s mysterious deaths.

He also said the “The French Connection” actor and his wife, whom he was married to for 34 years, tested negative for carbon monoxide poisoning and did not show signs of any external trauma.

Hackman and Arakawa’s causes of death will be determined pending additional testing.

Elizabeth and her sister, Leslie, along with Hackman’s granddaughter, Annie, confirmed their deaths to The Post on Thursday.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy,” their statement read.

“He was loved and admired by millions around the world for his brilliant acting career, but to us he was always just Dad and Grandpa,” they continued. “We will miss him sorely and are devastated by the loss.”

Leslie later revealed that she “hadn’t talked” to her famous father in “months” while claiming that he was in good health.

The police affidavit described the chilling death scene, revealing the couple’s home was “unsecured and opened,” and there was no sign of forced entry or theft.

Responding officers also noted an open orange prescription pill bottle and pills were scattered around the room where Arakawa was discovered, along with their deceased dog, who was nearby in a kennel.

She had “obvious signs of death, body decomposition, bloating in her face and mummification in both hands and feet,” per the affidavit, which also noted that Hackman had “obvious signs of death, similar and consistent with the female decedent” when he was found in what police determined to be the couple’s mudroom.

Police seized several items from Hackman and Arakawa’s home, including two green cellphones, Tylenol, a thyroid medication and Diltiazem, a high blood pressure pill, medical records and a 2025 planner, which they hope will help put together a timeline of events.

Authorities will also review cellphone data, phone calls, texts, photos and more.

Law enforcement does not suspect foul play but found the deaths “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation,” which is still underway.

Meanwhile, friends of the family exclusively told The Post the pair had a beautiful relationship.

“They had a true love affair … Capital L love,” film producer Matthew Gross shared on Thursday. “They were very happy together, and we are all incredibly, incredibly shocked by this.”
