Ex-Yankee Brett Gardner pays tribute to son Miller in heart-wrenching obituary after teen died in Costa Rica

Former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner and wife Jessica paid tribute to their son Miller in a touching obituary, saying that his smile “brought joy to all,” after the 14-year-old died suddenly on vacation in Costa Rica.

“The void Miller’s passing leaves in the hearts of his family, friends, teammates, teachers, coaches and others will be felt for years,” the family wrote.

“The Gardner family will forever cherish the places they visited, the people they met, the friends they made, and the memories they created together.”

The moving memorial comes as the cause of the teen’s March 21 death remains a mystery — with authorities in Costa Rica awaiting the results of tests and an autopsy.

The teen, an eighth grader at Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville, South Carolina, was remembered as an active honor roll student who excelled in football and baseball – wearing 11 on his uniform, in honor of his father’s tenure with the Yankees.

“Miller’s time here with [his friends and family] was brief, but his spirit will carry on forever through those who were impacted by the way he lived,” the obit in the Post and Courier in South Carolina said. “Miller was so blessed with experiences and friendships in his 14 years, and would want other children to have the opportunity to create their own wonderful memories.”

The family asked for donations to the Make-a-Wish Foundation in Miller’s honor.

“The Gardners have seen the organization’s impact firsthand on numerous occasions and have always been deeply moved by the hope, strength and inspiration each wish provides for children and families facing difficult times.”

Brett and Jessica Gardner and their sons, Miller and Hunter, were on vacation at the Arenas Del Mar resort in Manuel Antonio when the teen died in his sleep.

Costa Rican authorities said toxicology results to determine his cause of death could take as long as three months, but has been classified as a priority.

According to the obituary, a memorial service will be reserved for family and close friends.
Brett Gardner manned the outfield for the Bronx Bombers for his entire 14-year major league career, and was a member of the 2009 World Series champions.
