Charlamagne Tha God is calling on Democrats to turn to new leaders who “fight back,” saying both House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) should be given the boot.
“It’s not my job to say that any particular candidates need to be primaried and thrown out of office,” the media personality said during a segment on Tuesday’s “The Daily Show.”
“But Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer need to be primaried and thrown out of office,” Charlamagne, who was born Lenard McKelvey, said to applause.
Charlamagne said Schumer is “not the man with a plan to fight [President] Trump,” and compared Jeffries to a character in “The Matrix,” telling the audience, “I’m not too inspired by business casual Morpheus. You take the blue pill, nothing changes. You take the red pill, nothing changes — but with cherry flavor.”
The 46-year-old “Get Honest or Die Lying” author praised Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), who set a new record Tuesday for the longest floor speech in Senate history.
“A Democrat actually doing something — wow,” Charlamagne exclaimed.
“He’s only talking, but he’s talking a lot, so I’ll take it,” he said of Booker.
“What Booker did today is like the political version of phone sex: It’s not as good as the real thing, but it’s a hell of a lot better than nothing. And nothing is what it seems like the Democratic Party has been doing for the last three months,” he said on the Comedy Central show.
Charlamagne lauded Rep. Jasmine Crockett for her approach. The Texas Democrat was recently criticized for referring to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R), who uses a wheelchair, as “Governor Hot Wheels” during a speech last month.
“I’m not saying Democrats need to be offensive like Trump is, just show any kind of authenticity and fight,” Charlamagne said.
“Democrats just need to fight back,” he continued.
“Whether that looks like filibustering on the Senate floor, rallying across the country or getting in a roast battle with a wheelchair-bound senior citizen, you gotta take that fight.”
