Former NFLers Will Compton and Taylor Lewan, hosts of the popular podcast “Bussin With The Boys,” were shocked to find out that their former boss Dave Portnoy was unaware that Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has an issue with Barstool Sports.
The issue came up after Portnoy went scorched earth on Lewan, who asked Mahomes during Super Bowl Opening Night if he would be more inclined to appear on the show with its Barstool association ending.
Mahomes indicated that it helped their chances and Portnoy launched into an explicit tirade against Lewan insinuating that the podcast host was performing a lewd sexual act on the NFL star with Lewan’s phrasing of his question.
“I was surprised that he did not know Mahomes didn’t like Barstool,” Compton said during an episode of “Bussin With The Boys” released this week.
Lewan and Compton indicated that they have once again buried the hatchet with Portnoy after having dinner with him during Super Bowl week, but couldn’t help but be caught off guard about Portnoy’s lack of awareness as to why Mahomes might not like his outlet.
“Dave did not understand that Patrick is openly not a fan of Barstool Sports,” Lewan said. “And when he was confused about it, it’s like, ‘Dave, just watch what your company posts.’ Because it’s like one thing if the New York Times or whatever is like, ‘Patrick Mahomes’ family might be a distraction for Patrick Mahomes and his success in the NFL.’ That would be a title that a mainstream company would put on.
“Barstool Sports would be like, ‘Patrick Mahomes’ brother should go to prison for the way he dances on TikTok.’ ‘His wife’s a bitch.’ Just saying super, very Barstool things. And so, obviously, he’s going to be upset by that. But once Dave was like, ‘I didn’t know that Pat hated us, and Big Cat literally told me,’ I was like, ‘Well, yeah, that’s the phrasing of the question.”
“Bussin With The Boys” will be leaving Barstool and taking a sponsorship deal with FanDuel, though both Lewan and Compton had said they didn’t want to leave the Portnoy-owned company.
The pair had believed it was a well-known fact within the company that Mahomes wouldn’t appear on any Barstool-related programs, especially after Dan Katz – better known as Barstool Big Cat – had said as much previously, Lewan believed.
“Again, when we were at the dinner with Dave, ‘I’m legitimately surprised you didn’t know he wasn’t messing with Barstool,’” Compton said. “We had even gotten close before. So, that’s why even the context of the question, even on our story and journey with Mahomes, too; he was close to coming on, and ultimately, he was choosing not to do anything Barstool-related.”
The result ended up being the graphic rant by Portnoy during Barstool’s “The Unnamed Show” where he said Lewan had Mahomes’ “c–k down his throat.”
Lewan did suggest he could have worded his question to Mahomes differently and that he didn’t think that the comment “was going to hurt anyone’s feelings on the Barstool end.”
“Truly, 100 percent, that was a genuine thought process. I reiterated that to Dave at dinner and actually sent him a text on our flight back,” he said. “Would never intentionally try to or hurt the look of Barstool Sports, so Patrick Mahomes would come on our show. But in the words of Dave Portnoy, ‘Numbers are numbers.’ That s–t did go crazy.”
While it wasn’t abundantly clear, it did seem like the drama between the “Bussin With The Boys” podcast and Barstool Sports has come to a close.
