My full-time job isn’t all about coils, springs and memory foam, but I can tell you pretty much all there is to know about shopping for and finding the best mattress for you.
I’ve slept on utterly uncomfortable twin beds at my family’s beach house (long story short: they’ve left the coastal-themed bedroom). I’ve asked my parents pretty much every other year for a new mattress because I never found the *right* one (yeah, I’m the favorite child, clearly).
I’ve also tried and reviewed the bed-in-a-box Casper mattress and the high-tech Sleep Number smart bed, the latter coming with a paired app to change the firmness level and take notice of my “sleep score.” But, when it came time to move in with my fiancé, I was ready for full-on luxury: a mattress that would stand the test of time.
Beautyrest, Beautyrest, Beautyrest. That’s the brand that has the incomprehensibly plush, posh and…dare I say perfect…mattress. The Beautyrest Black Series Three Plush Pillow Top Mattress was the topper of choice we both fell in love with at the brick-and-mortar Mattress Firm store just a stone’s throw away from our new house and, ultimately, the one we wanted to ship straight to our master bedroom.

Labeled the brand’s “most advanced sleep system,” this model features its proprietary Triple-Stranded Pocketed Coil Technology for maximum individualized support. It’s also clad with ultimate in-motion separation, pressure relief and temperature management.
The model I tested (and won’t stop sleeping on) is the Black Series Three Plush Pillow Top Mattress, though Beautyrest offers other iterations. The suite of models includes the Series One, Series Two, and Series Three, each ranging in firmness levels: extra firm, firm pillow top, medium, medium pillow top, plush, and plush pillow top.

Size options: Twin XL to California King

About Beautyrest
The more I learned about Beautyrest — its mission, what type of sleep products its catalog offers — the clearer it became that this brand doesn’t sleep on individualized support, motion separation and simply a good night’s rest.
Beautyrest was founded in 1925, right before the Great Depression, but its ethical manufacturing process and supreme comfort aren’t anything to be depressed about.
With “luxury is our legacy” as its tagline, Beautyrest isn’t skimpy with its suite of sleep toppers. For all of its products, Beautyrest uses the highest-quality materials, all void of harsh chemicals, and entwines its Pocketed Coil Technology into each Black Series mattress.
Its foams are CertiPUR-US certified, so, in addition to excluding harmful chemicals, the material meets low-VOC standards for indoor air quality set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The company reigns supreme when it comes to personalized support, so much so that each mattress delivers individualized comfort and motion isolation that’s specially designed for you as the unique sleeper. Grandiose appeal aside, its individualized support options allow an array of mismatched sleepers to land on a mattress (literally, tummy-side up) that feels most appropriate to them. From extra firm to plush pillow top, there’s a firmness level suited for every type of sleeper.
“Beautyrest is known for offering mattresses that provide individualized support and motion separation, powered by Pocketed Coil Technology that provides personalized support for all sleep positions, resulting in undisturbed rest no matter what’s moving on the other side of the bed,” Rolf Sannes, senior vice -president at Beautyrest with more than 15 years in the bedding industry, exclusively shared with Post Wanted.
Beautyrest product offerings
Beyond the Beautyrest Black Series I reviewed, Beautyrest offers three collections outside of its flagship line:
The Beautyrest PressureSmart Mattress (starting at $1,650) is another option if you prioritize a cooling mattress with a supportive-first design. Beautyrest hybrid mattresses also span far and wide, and fun fact, the Black Series I tested falls into this class of mattresses.
Oh, and before you scroll some more, you’ll likely want to peruse some Beautyrest pillows — because luxury doesn’t end at your mattress.
Is Beautyrest worth it?
Just so you know, how you spend your money is an entirely personal decision. However, given that you spend a third of your life in bed, I’d vouch for splurging a bit on a good night’s rest.
Queen and king-sized mattresses are commonplace, but keep in mind they typically come with a higher price tag. Depending on your preferred mattress height and plushness, a Beautyrest mattress is a product, in particular, I’d recommend to anyone. As mentioned, the brand offers a rotisserie of firmness levels to match anyone’s sleeping habits.
After sleeping on my Beautyrest Black Series Three Plush Pillow Top Mattress for four months now, I can confidently say that it offers a safe, luxurious and comfortable place to land each evening. To that point, I still tell my fiancé over and over again: I freaking love our mattress. But I’ll share more of that goodness in my review.
My review
Let’s be clear: comfort is subjective, and just because I would sing a song about this Beautyrest mattress (truthfully, don’t tempt me), not everyone would. As a loyal side sleeper, this was the only mattress I tested at Mattress Firm that I didn’t want to depart from.
It’s kind of like my recent experience of choosing a wedding dress. You’ll know it’s the one when you don’t want to take it off.
While the Beautyrest Black Series Three Plush Pillow Top Mattress doesn’t come tout compris with a cathedral veil and a satin dress, I do feel like a princess when I sleep on it. Not to be confused with the Princess and the Pea; there’s nothing uncomfortable about this sleep solution.

Pros:
- Premium quality that’s specially designed for side sleepers
- Breathable and molds to your body while still providing support
- Fits nicely with the brand’s Adjustable Base (sold separately)
- Backed by a 10-year limited warranty when purchased at Beautyrest.com
Cons:
- One of the most expensive mattresses (but wholly worth it, in my opinion)
- May be too tall for some folks
- Doesn’t come in twin and split-king sizes, though it is available in twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king sizes
The Beautyrest Black Series Three Plush Pillow Top Mattress has a design that’s simply teeming with luxe comfort. At my local Mattress Firm store, I laid on the Series Two and Series Three mattresses and didn’t notice a great difference between the two, though the Series Three is acclaimed for being a bit more advanced with its coil technology, along with having a thicker layer of comfort that lends itself to a softer feel and, as a result, a wee bit more pressure relief.
I had this preconceived notion that memory foam was the only way to go. Growing up with “traditional” memories exhibiting squeaky and irksome coils, I thought the mattress marketing jargon of “hybrid” mattresses would be the real deal. But, for me, I found them to be mushy and unsupportive.
My delivery experience
I’ve had my fair share of absolutely horrible furniture deliveries. Thankfully, the Beautyrest shipping process was quick, painless and exactly what I needed when I was in a time crunch to move into our new house.
Beautyrest offers free shipping and White Glove Delivery. Two delivery persons arrived at my house, carefully walked up my stairs so as not to scuff my newly painted walls (the thought of buying a new can of Benjamin Moore’s “Balboa Mist” for touchups wasn’t what I dreamed of doing) and secured it onto the adjustable base and my bed frame.
The experience probably took all of 10 minutes, leaving me time to thank them, shut the door, and plop right onto my Plush Pillow Top, because it truly is a luxury!
Its unparalleled support
So, back to the coils. Even the word “coils” seems to conjure negative thoughts on comfort, but rest assured, the Beautyrest Black Series Three Plush Pillow Top Mattress is like jumping on a cloud but not sinking in and falling into the abyss. It’s supportive, provides individualized support for two people, and makes me want to always hit snooze.
“Designed with Triple-Stranded Pocketed Coil Technology, this mattress offers increased, individualized support and motion separation with a 2K Nano Coil upgrade,” Sannes explained. “Sleep Climate Technology works with a Micro Diamond Memory Foam upgrade to enhance heat transfer from the body, while SurfaceTouch Gel Memory Foam and Self-Response Latex upgrades conform to the body for responsive pressure relief.”
How it compares to other mattresses I reviewed
Dialing back the technical terms, this mattress is breathable, extraordinarily plush and contours to the body. Unlike the Sleep Number smart bed, which I found to be more like an overpriced air mattress after testing it long-term, this Beautyrest model doesn’t leave that noticeable “dip” in the bed or begin squeaking after weeks of sleeping on it. Instead, it holds its form, meets your body where you’re at, and provides you with a reliable place to lie down and catch those ZZZs.
Similarly, the Casper mattress I reviewed for one year straight was more comfortable than Sleep Number, but I found it to be a bit mushier and supportive over time. This Beautyrest model blew both brands out of the water and is one of those “you really need this product” products. Once you invest in one, you’ll understand.
If you opt for the same model, the Plush Pillow Top, you’ll find that it is exceptionally high, though looks hotel-style and high-end once placed on a bed frame. This characteristic makes it a far cry from the mod, low-to-the-ground Casper model and even the Sleep Number smart bed that was installed sans boxspring.
Its supreme comfort
As illustrated in my Wayfair review, my Beautyrest mattress fits snugly inside the Joss & Main Hanson Upholstered Wingback Bed. It’s also worth noting that I own the Beautyrest Adjustable Base, topped with a retail price of $699. It sounds steep, but I have the most royal bedding combination ever:
- My Beautyrest Black Series Three Plush Pillow Top Mattress (obviously)
- The adjustable base, which allows the headrest and footrest areas of the bed, either individually or in tandem, to be elevated for your comfort
- My Cozy Earth duvet cover, bed sheets and pillows, as lovingly written about in my Cozy Earth review
- My modern, slim and crystal-clear Hisense Smart TV that makes my fiancé and me skip the cinema and stream our favorite shows from our ultra-plush bed
See the vibes? They’re all there.
TLDR: What are the negatives?
Realistically, I’d love to be approachable and name a few negative things about this mattress, but the truth of the matter is that there aren’t any that come to mind outside of two factors.
Its price point may be out of reach for some shoppers, though I’d argue it’s entirely worth it. It may also be too high to accommodate certain bed frames and preferences.
Conveniently, my nightstands and bed frame tie in beautifully with the height of this mattress. However, keep in mind that I also have the adjustable base installed. It certainly adds to my sleep experience but if height is a big issue for you, I’d recommend only purchasing the mattress. The adjustable base doesn’t add anything comfort-wise to the Beautyrest mattress; it merely enriches the sleep experience.
It may be of interest to you, as a potential new Beautyrest mattress owner, to note that this model doesn’t come in twin sizing. It’s available from twin XL to California king — so no split-king size, either — but that’s not a dealbreaker. A few top mattress brands, such as Tuft & Needle and Avocado Green don’t boast vast size options with select models.
Who the Beautyrest mattress is best for
I can say this Beautyrest mattress is comfortable a million times over, but once again, that’s subjective. So, I called upon Sannes to share the key differences between each firmness level, beginning with the exact one I tested: the Plush Pillow Top.
“Plush feel models are typically best for side sleepers because the cushioning feel helps to relieve pressure and pain points in consumers’ shoulders and hips, making sure they wake up feeling refreshed,” he offered.
Additionally, Extra Firm and Firm feel models are typically best for back and stomach sleepers, as they offer extra support to decrease any pain points. Sannes also explained that Medium feel models are great for all types of sleepers, thanks to their unique ability to offer a balance of comfort and support for all sleep positions.
The final verdict
So, is the Beautyrest Black Series Three Plush Pillow Top Mattress worth it? The short answer: yes.
What you invest in at the end of the day is your decision. However, I will say when I give people the full tour of my new house, I always brag about the mattress, instantly grabbing the adjustable base’s remote and placing both of my hands on my mattress’s Pillow Top plushness.
It’s more than just the oohs and aahs I receive; this mattress is pure bliss. There’s no other way to say it. While it’s on the more expensive side, it’s 10-year limited warranty (when purchased from Beautyrest.com), gives you additional peace of mind that it’ll last the long haul.
Sure, you can certainly be content with the average mattress you grab on Amazon, but the experience of skipping the Ritz-Carlton and having a razzle-dazzle mattress in your humble abode is worth biting the bullet and saving yourself the stress of repurchasing a new mattress every few years.
In conclusion, you shouldn’t sleep on your decision. You should sleep on this Beautyrest mattress.
How I tested
Before testing the Beautyrest Black Series Three Plush Pillow Top Mattress, I spent ample time conducting research, familiarizing myself with all of the mattress terminology, and becoming a full-on expert on my model.
After four months of nonstop testing, here are the criteria I snuggled up with:
- Firmness level: I took note of how hard or soft the surface of the mattress felt, influencing the level of support it provided to my body — and my fiancè — while sleeping.
- Support: I assessed the mattress’ ability to maintain proper spinal alignment and evenly distribute my body weight to prevent discomfort or strain.
- Edge support: The reinforcement along the perimeter of the mattress, which helps prevent sagging, is critical to take note of. Adequate edge support also ensures stability when sitting or sleeping near the edges.
- Breathability: Whether you’re a hot, cold or normal-ish sleeper, breathability is important. When sleeping, I noticed if there was sufficient air circulation throughout the night to keep our sleep warm yet breathable.
- How it compares: They say you have to kiss a few frogs to land your prince, and the same kind of idea applies to mattress shopping. Because of my unfortunate fair share of scrappy mattresses, I was able to assess this mattress non-partisan-style — brand and price point aside.
