We tested the 8 best pillows for every kind of sleeper

If you’re still sleeping on the same flattened, lumpy disgrace of a pillow you’ve had since college, it’s time for an intervention.

Your neck is in shambles, and your spine has filed a formal complaint. Sleep is sacred, or at least it should be, and the right pillow is the difference between waking up refreshed and waking up feeling like you got hit by a small bus. It’s time to upgrade.

SAVE During Sleep Week 2026

But with the endless chaos of memory foam, down, hybrid, cooling, and ergonomic, choosing the perfect pillow feels like a high-stakes gamble. Do you go for the plush, cloud-like luxury of goose down? The sculpted support of a memory foam fortress?

Fear not. We’ve waded through the marketing, the overly complicated firmness charts, and the countless “game-changing” pillow innovations to bring you the absolute best of the best.

Whether you sleep like a vampire, a starfish, or someone perpetually on the verge of spinal collapse, there’s a pillow that will change your life — or at least prevent you from waking up feeling like a victim.

“There are numerous types of pillows depending on your needs and preferences, with the most common fill materials being down or down alternative, memory foam (shredded or solid), feathers, latex, cotton and buckwheat,” David Rubin, sleep science coach and product expert at The Sleep Doctor, told the New York Post.

“Along with your mattress and bedding, a pillow is a critical piece of what we call your sleep system. You need to match your pillow to your mattress firmness, sleep position, and any pain issues you experience.”

Best Bed Pillows of 2026

Best for most sleepers: FluffCo Down Alternative Pillow

FluffCo Down Alternative Pillow
FluffCo

Pros:

  • Filled with “soft” fluff (less filling) as opposed to “firm” fluff (more filling) to make it more lightweight and dreamy
  • Contains all-vegan microfiber to confer a great value for the customer

Upon first sleep with the FluffCo Down Alternative Pillow, I just knew. I knew this pillow would be the one I wanted to continue sleeping with after my Princess and the Pea product-testing moment.

When reviewing pillows, I tried to think of the fuller picture: What’s a pillow everyone may like? What’s a pillow I can present to anyone and they’d, for the most part, think, wow, that’s comfortable? This one, right here, is the most consistent in terms of its lightweight design, softness, support and sleep quality.

Impressively, FluffCo has conducted extensive research to best understand why hotel pillows are so comfortable. After prototyping, the brand has developed a sustainable pillow with custom “Fluff” blends to make hotel-quality bedding more accessible and at arm’s reach. I love the brand’s mission and story just as much as I enjoy my now-better sleep (the best I’ve had in a while, noticeably thanks to this sole pillow).

“Hotels tend to use medium firmness and loft pillows since they are most likely to accommodate a variety of sleepers,” Rubin explains. “They tend to be allergy-friendly and are made from high-quality materials.”

FluffCo even provides a hotel comparison chart, detailing the price Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton and Fairmont charge for their pillows alongside FluffCo’s approximate $69 value. Compared to other pillows tested, this one is the best value — all factors (softness, support, etc.) considered.

The edges of the brand’s Down Alternative Pillow aren’t extremely structured, which I like. This makes it simple to squish into a pillowcase or sham. I like this feature because I no longer have to store my daily pillow in a closet or somewhere else in my bedroom. When I make my bed — duvet cover, throw pillows and all — I can have my FluffCo set waiting for me.

Bedsure 2-Pack Hotel Pillows
Amazon

Pros:

  • Excellent price for a pillow that’s pretty comfortable
  • Two pillows for the price of one (actually, much less than one)
  • Wonderful for soft pillow lovers

Cons:

  • Not as supportive as some other pillows tested
  • Takes a bit of time to “fluff” up after delivery

If you’ve ever shopped for bedding on Amazon, you’ve likely heard of Bedsure. The brand has quite a stellar reputation thanks to its affinity for affordable comfort that you can’t help but look into. As a result, Bedsure made the top of my list of pillows I want to try — and it measures up quite well to the rest of the more expensive pack.

“Puffy” is a good word to describe this pillow. When I first touched this pillow, I immediately recognized an airiness at the center — right where your head would go, regardless of your sleep position. It’s softer than most I tested, even though it puffs up a suitable amount after I unboxed it. And yes, it will take some time for any pillows online to “fluff up to size,” with this one taking a bit longer.

Because of its puffiness and airiness, it’s a wonderful (and affordable!) option for anyone who can’t stand a firm pillow and, instead, craves cloud-like comfort. Though not the most supportive pillow tested, the value is still there and I’d continue to sleep with the pillow without hesitation.

Size: 28″L x 19″W | Firmness Level: Soft | Fill: Down Alternative | Outer cover: Polyster Microfiber

Beautyrest Harmony Lux Pillow
Pillows sold individually; Standard size shown. Beautyrest

Pros:

  • Supremely soft exterior lining for a brushed softness that’ll ease you right to sleep
  • Sustainably made covers made from plastic bottles sourced from the ocean
  • Offers a bit more support than most, especially for people who want their neck to feel almost cradled in cushion

Cons:

  • Pricepoint may not be accessible for some
  • Doesn’t fit too neatly inside a pillow sham

Hailing from a mattress brand, the Beautyrest Harmony Lux Pillow was one I was most excited to try. Listen, I’ve been to several mattress stores (arguably too many to count) and I’m always impressed by what feels like a spinning rotisserie of pillows atop each showroom mattress. I wanted to see if ordering a pillow from a legacy mattress brand would be worth the added cost.

Spoiler alert: it did. When testing, I immediately thought this pillow would be good for back and side sleepers alike (and yes, I did plenty of tossing and turning to come to this conclusion). Additionally, it seemed to be a more logical fit for anyone with a weaker neck or anyone who craves additional firmer support, like (1) my dad who thinks neck massages and a firm bed should be two non-negotiables for anyone and (2) my boyfriend’s grandmother who won’t benefit from soft pillows or a sink-in mattress at her age.

Above all, I love how the exterior of this pillow has a sustainable, brushed lining that feels like you’re lying on a velvet cushion. While it doesn’t fit quite picture-perfectly into a pillow sham — and it’s a bit of an investment — I found myself loving the comfort and not feeling like I had to sleep a certain way to get comfortable.

Marlow Pillow
Brooklinen

Pros:

  • You can adjust the firmness level at any time, thanks to the exterior zipper border that allows you to remove memory foam
  • Offers wonderful support
  • Vegan and allergen-friendly

Cons:

  • Isn’t as large as other pillows tested

I’ve been hearing much talk about the Marlow Pillow, and now I know why. Allow me to paint the picture — do you know that feeling when you flip your pillow to have the “cool side” again? Yeah, you don’t have to do that any longer once you sleep with this particular option.

I’ve tested plenty of cooling sheets but never have I slept on a cooling pillow. I’m usually a cold sleeper but truth be told, you’ll never find a more luxe experience than you would when sleeping with a cooling pillow and a soft (preferably plush) throw blanket. In fact, a quality cooling pillow may help “prevent heat retention and provide a cool or temperature-neutral sleep surface,” per the Sleep Foundation.

The Marlow Pillow has a genius design like no other, too. If you’re the type who likes a firm pillow one day and a soft pillow the next, you’ll appreciate how its exterior zipper border allows you to remove memory foam. I found the pillows medium-softness to fare well for my evening slumber, so I didn’t find myself doing this all too often, but it’s like my Sleep Number c2 Mattress in a way: adjustable and custom to each night.

Though there isn’t as grand of a surface area to work with (the Marlow Pillow is a bit smaller than others tested), it’s a wonderful and fairly priced option if a cooling pillow is what you’re after. I’ve been singing its praises to many people who are hot sleepers, too.

Purple DreamLayer Pillow
Purple

Pros:

  • Conforms to your head shape and contours around it for personalized comfort each night
  • Extremely plush and breathable
  • Offers one of the best levels of support tested
  • Great for all types of sleepers

Cons:

  • Some may find it too elevated
  • Not exactly travel-friendly, due to its thickness

The Purple DreamLayer Pillow is one you simply have to experience. It’s a splurge but, by far, one of the most comfortable pillows tested with a wealth of support and a unique experience like no other.

You may be thinking, What experience does it offer, exactly? Well, it conforms to your neck once you lie down, allowing you to blissfully melt into your pillow before you drift off to sleep. This is due to its proprietary elFlex Grid technology that cools and instantly adapts to your body, along with its MicroAir Foam that gently conforms and hugs.

It’s not exactly travel-friendly, though I like how it offers two removable booster layers for adjustable height. This also allows it to fit seamlessly into a pillow sham or pillowcase.

I still can’t keep squishing the pillow. It has that it-factor to it that’s hard to verbalize but it’s one that will stand the test of time due to its conforming nature. I sleep with it regularly and it’s just as good for back and stomach sleepers as it is for side sleepers. Its memory foam is incredibly comfortable and it’s one that’ll always meet you where you’re at.

Because the pillow is a bit more tailored to your neck and allows you to melt right into it, it’s a great option for those who may be experiencing neck pain (like myself, before finding a good pillow from this review). Of course, be sure to consult with a medical professional for any lingering issues.

“The most important thing when choosing a pillow for neck pain is matching your pillow to your sleep position,” Rubin says. “If your pillow is the wrong firmness or loft for your sleep position and weight, odds are you’ll end up with neck pain. A good universal choice would be an adjustable pillow made from shredded memory foam or latex.”

Tuft & Needle Original Foam Pillow
Tuft & Needle

Pros:

  • Adaptive foam offers supportive comfort without feeling overly dense
  • Maintains shape throughout the night without constant fluffing
  • Breathable design that helps regulate temperature

Cons:

  • May feel too firm for those who prefer ultra-plush pillows
  • Less ideal for strict side sleepers who need higher loft

The Tuft & Needle Original Foam Pillow is one of those deceptively simple designs that ends up outperforming far more complicated options. As someone who primarily sleeps on my side but occasionally rotates onto my back or stomach during the night, I found this pillow to be particularly comfortable in those positions — the kind of dependable support that doesn’t require constant adjustment.

Unlike traditional memory foam pillows that feel dense and slow to respond, Tuft & Needle’s adaptive foam has a slightly springier feel. When I slept on my back, my head settled naturally into the pillow without sinking too deeply, keeping my neck comfortably aligned with the rest of my spine. On my stomach, where many pillows feel too tall or stiff, this one compressed just enough to avoid pushing my neck upward at an awkward angle.

Another benefit during testing was how well the pillow held its shape overnight. Many softer pillows require frequent fluffing to maintain support, but this foam construction stayed consistent from the moment I fell asleep to the moment my alarm went off. The breathable foam also prevented the pillow from feeling overly warm — something that can be an issue with more traditional foam options.

“Back sleepers generally need a lower to medium loft pillow (can be firm) that won’t bend their necks too much when sleeping, usually on a firmer mattress,” Rubin told The Post. This one is exactly that.

Size: 25″ L x 16″ W, 5″ D| Firmness Level: Medium | Fill: Foam | Outer cover: Polyester

White pillow with a unique, ergonomic shape and honeycomb-like texture.
Buffy

Pros:

  • Designed specifically to support side sleepers’ neck and shoulder alignment
  • Exceptionally soft yet supportive fill that keeps its shape overnight
  • Breathable construction that stays cool through the night

Cons:

  • May feel too lofty for stomach sleepers

“Side sleepers should choose a pillow with medium to high loft that can support their head and neck,” Rubin told The Post. “There are even specialty crescent-shaped pillows for side sleepers to accommodate your shoulders.” Well, boy, did we find the one.

As someone who spends the majority of the night sleeping on my side (and wakes up immediately if my neck feels even slightly off), the Buffy Cloud Side Sleeper Pillow immediately stood out among the dozens I’ve tested. Most pillows claim to work for side sleepers, but this one is actually engineered for it, and that difference becomes obvious the moment your head hits the pillow.

The first thing I noticed was the generous loft and structured feel through the center, which fills the natural gap between your shoulder and neck when lying on your side. Many pillows flatten overnight, leaving your neck angled awkwardly toward the mattress, but this one held its shape far better than expected. It manages to feel plush and cloud-like — true to its name — without collapsing into a pancake by morning.

During testing, I also appreciated how breathable it felt compared to many dense foam pillows. Some supportive options can run warm, but Buffy’s airy fill kept things comfortable through the night. Even after several nights of rotating between different pillows for comparison, I kept gravitating back to this one because it consistently delivered the kind of alignment that lets you fall asleep faster and wake up without that familiar shoulder tension.

Wedge pillow with a white cover.
Brooklyn Bedding

Pros:

  • Elevated design supports back, neck, and shoulders for upright comfort
  • High-density foam holds its shape without collapsing
  • Versatile for reading, sleeping, or relieving reflux and congestion

Cons:

  • Bulky compared to standard pillows
  • Not intended for traditional stomach sleeping

Once you use a good wedge pillow, whether it’s for better back sleeping or breathing, it’s hard to imagine going back. The Brooklyn Bedding Wedge Pillow has become my go-to whenever I wanted extra support while sitting up in bed, whether that meant reading, working on my laptop, or simply watching something without stacking three flattened pillows behind my back.

The angled design provides a gradual incline that feels much more stable than a pile of standard pillows. During testing, I noticed how well the dense foam maintained its structure. Even after extended use, it didn’t slump or compress in the middle the way softer pillows often do. That firmness is exactly what allows the wedge shape to work properly, keeping your upper body supported rather than sliding downward.

On nights when I felt congested from allergies or the inevitable seasonal cold, the incline helped keep my head and shoulders lifted and my airways open without straining my neck. The foam strikes a good balance: supportive enough to hold its shape, but still comfortable against the back and shoulders.

How We Tested

Best Pillows Review
Some of the pillows tested, from Beautyrest to Tuft & Needle. Victoria Giardina

While testing pillows has been relaxing, it has also been quite an adventure. Transparently, it can be somewhat difficult to assess if a pillow is good for back sleepers if I primarily sleep on my side, but I did test out each pillow from all different angles to get a feel for what is most comfortable.

Let’s start with the basics — I like a pillow on the softer side but one that doesn’t compromise support. This goes for anyone, but too elevated of a pillow may cause neck pain as the base of your neck isn’t level with your pillow.

This list is curated with the top options after testing pillows for as little as one month and as long as three years. Here is the testing criteria I used for each pillow reviewed here:

  • Comfortability: This goes without saying but, if a pillow is uncomfortable, it’s not worth compromising your recommended eight hours of sleep with. Comfort is subjective, but you can certainly pinpoint a good, plush pillow from the rest of the pack.
  • Head support: I’m prone to having a weak neck (or, I’ve simply slept on bad pillows for quite some time). You don’t want to strain your neck or upper shoulder area while you’re sleeping, so I took this factor into account while testing.
  • Ability to fit into a pillowcase and/or sham: Much to my surprise, some pillows were so dense or stuffed that they didn’t fit well into a standard-size pillowcase or sham. This was something I figured from the onset but it wasn’t until I tested all the pillows that I was able to discern which ones *just* made it.
  • Value: Listen, a good pillow can be an investment — but it’s one of those things that should be. You sleep for a good percentage of your lifespan, so you want it to be comfortable. However, just because a pillow is more than $100 doesn’t necessarily make it “better.”
