I highlighted in my prayer Bible some verses dealing with bitterness and anger. One verse that jumped at me was in Proverbs 16:32 ” He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.” ( KJV). I know within my own family we have had to deal with anger issues and sometimes it can be ugly. Our pastor often says “Family can be complicated”. I think church family can also be complicated. I’m dealing with some church family who’ve done some unkind things. I do my best not to allow it to get to me but sometimes the old flesh will come in. I think probably what happens is there are those within many churches who like to form cliques or like to share a “prayer request” that is actually gossip. I have been the object of gossip and can be extremely hurtful especially if the gossip is untrue. When that happens I have to let it go and pray for those involved. Hebrews 12:14 says “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord. Continuing with verse 15 it says ” Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.” I have had to pray these verses asking the Lord to help me to have peace with my fellow church members especially my church sisters so that I don’t allow a root of bitterness in my heart.
