President Donald Trump said Friday that he is “strongly considering” a new set of sanctions and tariffs on Russia as part of his administration’s effort to broker a lasting ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.

Trump called on Russia and Ukraine to “get to the table right now, before it is too late.”

The warning is the first time Trump has threatened Russia, according to Axios, which reported that the sanctions would come in addition to those instituted by former president Joe Biden. The post comes after Trump halted intelligence-sharing and U.S. aid to Ukraine following his heated meeting with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.

Trump’s “rage” against Russia “has been intensifying” in recent days, as Russian president Vladimir Putin has escalated strikes while Trump works for a ceasefire, a senior White House official told Axios.

U.S. and Ukrainian officials reportedly plan to meet next week to discuss a peace deal.
