Michigan State beats Maryland on half-court buzzer-beater

Tre Holloman hit the shot of a lifetime.

The Michigan State guard hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to lift the No. 8 Spartans to a 58-55 win over the No. 16 Maryland Terrapins on Wednesday night that stunned the XFINITY Center crowd.

Maryland’s Ja’Kobi Gillespie fired a 3-pointer that hit off the backboard before the Spartans grabbed the rebound with mere seconds left on the clock.

Holloman launched a shot from the logo behind the mid-court line that went through the hoop for the win.

The Spartans stormed off their bench and swarmed the late-game hero in jubilation.

“I [saw] the rim and then the shot clock going down so I had to throw it up,” Holloman told Big Ten Network. “We practiced those, so I just got up and it went in.”

Holloman said the last time he had a game-winning shot was back in his senior year of high school.

“That was a lucky shot, but nobody can say we didn’t deserve to win this game,” Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo said. “I mean we made some bad mistakes, give them credit. We threw the ball away a little bit and everything. We deserve to win this game. To come into this place, I’m so proud of my guys and Tre made the big turnover and he made the lucky shot, but we deserve to win.”

Izzo added that he felt his team “played our tail off the whole time.”

Holloman is averaging 8.8 points per game and finished Wednesday night’s game with nine points.

The win was the Spartans’ fourth win in a row and their fifth in their last six games.
