Where Vladimir Guerrero’s looming $500 million free agency could take him

It should come as no surprise the Blue Jays failed to sign superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. It’s very tough to lock up a player of that stature with mere months to go.

Juan Soto’s record $765 million contract, which changed the equation, didn’t help their chances, either.

Guerrero, just 26 next month, surely has to be shooting for something north of $500M now. Though it’s uncertain exactly where the Jays were at Guerrero’s spring deadline, the Jays said they went beyond where they wanted to go. The mistake they made in years of negotiations is that they never went where they needed to go.

If they don’t sign Guerrero as a free agent, this will be a big blow to Toronto, which has difficulty attracting star players. It’s a shame because it’s a beautiful city and beautifully redone ballpark.
