Selena Gomez’s mom, Mandy Teefey, played cupid for her daughter and Benny Blanco over a decade before they became engaged.
“It’s actually very difficult to figure out. I was around 16, 17,” Gomez told Interview Magazine of how old she was when she first met her now-fiancé in their first joint interview published Friday.
“And we first had music come out in 2013 or something,” Blanco, 36, chimed in before adding, “Her mom set up a meeting between the two of us. This is right when I became big and she wasn’t a singer yet.”
At the time, the “Only Murders in the Building” star was working with Disney Records and was still starring in “Wizards of Waverly Place” on Disney Channel.
“When she started putting out music, I was so into it. I feel like she was the original sad girl,” Blanco said of his bride-to-be.
The duo confirmed they were merely “pals” when they first met; however, Gomez said the transition from their platonic relationship to a romantic one was “really simple.”
“We got in the studio to work on a song and we just talked; that’s how easy it was for me,” the 32-year-old pop sensation gushed before confessing, “I liked him before he liked me.”
Blanco — who previously collaborated with Gomez’s ex Justin Bieber — said that he “had no idea” that she had feelings for him.
“I feel like you could be friends with someone forever but not know until you have that one night,” the Rare Beauty founder said.
It wasn’t until their second date that Blanco realized Gomez’s feelings were more than that of just a friend.
“The second we started hanging out, I was like, ‘This is my wife.’ I was telling my mom, ‘This is the girl I’m going to marry,’” Blanco dished.
Later in the interview, Gomez’s groom-to-be admitted that he was “so pissed that it took this long” for their romantic relationship to blossom.
“It’s like, ‘How did we not figure this out sooner?’ I’m 36 years old,” he quipped, to which Gomez replied, “Timing is everything.”
The “Single Soon” songstress and Blanco announced their engagement with an Instagram post in early December 2024.
“forever begins now..,” Gomez captioned the photo of her marquise diamond engagement ring.
Blanco and Gomez announced their first joint album “I Said I Love You First” on Valentine’s Day. The album drops March 21.
