Drew Barrymore raised her daughters right. On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the actress revealed the advice her 10-year-old daughter Frankie recently gave her that proved she was wise beyond her years.
“She and I were driving here to work yesterday together and she said, ‘I think that you should tell your mom how much you thank her for giving you the opportunities that you did. Because we’re going to this place and your name is on the show,’” Barrymore recalled. “I said, ‘You know I asked for it not to be.’ She said, ‘That’s not my point.’ And she goes, ‘If she had never taken you on those auditions …’”
Barrymore said she sometimes wants to ask her mother what she was thinking when she decided to start her daughter in the industry at only 11 months old.
“Whatever her wild agenda or belief system was, Frankie’s point was none of this would’ve been possible without her choices,” Barrymore said. “I know that in my heart so much but she’s like, ‘I just feel like right now is an important time for you to tell her that.’ And I said, ‘I’ve told her that throughout my life but I will.’”
It’s no secret that Barrymore had a complicated relationship with her mother Jaid, who brought her to Studio 54 at only nine years old and sent her to a mental institution at 13. The star ultimately cut ties with Jaid when she got emancipated the following year.
Barrymore has since forgiven her mother, but she still opens up about their unconventional relationship on occasion. She revealed during an April 2023 episode of her talk show that she was “so confused about sexuality” because her mom dated her boyfriends.
Still, she was able to find love in her heart for Jaid.
“If my mom hadn’t schlepped me to every audition and become my manager, I might not be sitting here right now, and there’s nowhere on earth I’d rather be,” she said at the time.
