Chuck Pagano unretiring for Ravens reunion as defensive backs coach

Chuck Pagano is coming out of retirement to rejoin his former boss.

The 64-year-old former Colts head coach has agreed to become the senior secondary coach for the Ravens, the team announced Tuesday night.

Baltimore coach John Harbaugh hired Pagano as his defensive coordinator on his first Baltimore staff 16 years ago and the two now reunite.

“It’s exciting to add Coach Chuck Pagano to our defensive staff and continue to develop and grow our young and talented secondary,” Harbaugh said in a statement. “Chuck brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and coaching talent to our team. He has deep ties to the program and is excited to get to work.”

Pagano spent just the 2011 season in Baltimore before being hired as the Colts head coach. He missed 12 games during the 2012 season due to treatments for leukemia.

Pagano went 53-43 during his six seasons in Indianapolis and with three straight playoff appearances – including a loss to the Patriots in the 2014 AFC championship game with Andrew Luck at quarterback.

Pagano, a 36-year coaching veteran across all level, was fired by the Colts after going 4-12 in 2017 and three straight non-playoff seasons.

He retired in 2021 after two seasons as the Bears’ defensive coordinator under Matt Nagy.

He’s been a contributor to “The Pat McAfee” show since 2022 and will now be tasked with helping the Ravens get over the hump in the AFC after losing to the Bills in the division round this season.
