President Trump spoke Monday with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the two men discussing the relationship between the two countries and plans for Modi to visit the White House.
During the call, Trump stressed that India should increase the amount of American-made security equipment it purchases in an effort to balance the trade relationship between the two countries, the White House said in a readout of the call.
“The leaders discussed plans for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House, underscoring the strength of the friendship and strategic ties between our nations,” the White House said.
The two men also discussed security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East and Europe. And they spoke about the importance of the Quad alliance, which is made up of Australia, India, Japan and the United States. The alliance was a point of emphasis during the Biden administration.
Trump developed a close relationship with Modi during his first term. He attended a massive rally with Modi in Houston in 2019, and Trump visited India in February 2020, where thousands of people watched the two leaders speak in Ahmedabad.
