Gunman kills one, wounds another at Tennessee high school before turning gun on himself

ANTIOCH, Tenn. (WKRN) — Two students were allegedly shot by a 17-year-old student at a Tennessee high school cafeteria Wednesday morning, authorities have confirmed.

Metro Nashville Police spokesperson April Weatherly could not immediately describe the conditions of those who were shot at Antioch High School, which has about 2,000 students and is located in a neighborhood of Nashville about 10 miles southeast of downtown.

According to Metro Nashville Police, the situation at the school is contained. They say a student fired at two others before turning the gun on themself.

A spokesperson for Vanderbilt University Medical Center told Nexstar’s WKRN three patients were taken to their hospital. One student was pronounced dead upon arrival while another was treated for a graze wound to the arm. A third student was taken to Vanderbilt Pediatrics for treatment of an eye injury.

A parent speaking with WKRN said their student claimed the shooting happened in a cafeteria within the school.

In a statement, Sean Braisted, chief of communications and technology for Metro Nashville Public Schools, said Antioch High School “is on a lockdown due to shots being fired inside the school building.”

The person responsible for [the] shooting is no longer a threat,” the statement continued. “We will be gathering students in the auditorium and will provide information on reunification as soon as possible. This is an active crime scene and investigation. We will work with the MNPD to provide further updates as they become available.”

Dozens of law enforcement officials were seen outside the school and crews from Nexstar’s WKRN encountered a very active scene around the area.

Students were also seen boarding buses, apparently preparing to go to a nearby reunification center.

Investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are also reportedly on scene.

School shootings have been top of mind in Nashville. In March 2023, a shooter killed three 9-year-olds and three adults at a private Christian elementary school in the city, The Covenant School.
