Yankees’ Anthony Volpe makes up for first spring error

Noteworthy items during the Yankees’ Grapefruit League action Thursday:

Volpe up

Anthony Volpe hit a line drive to left-center field that would have been a single for most, but legged out a hustle double instead during the Yankees’ scoreless tie with the Marlins at Steinbrenner Field.

Volpe down

The hustle double came an inning after Volpe committed his first error of the spring, losing the ball on the transfer from his glove to his hand after cleanly fielding a grounder.

Caught my eye

Clayton Beeter made his first start of the spring and fired three shutout innings with four strikeouts against a representative Marlins lineup.

The right-hander, who finished last season at Triple-A, looks close to helping out the Yankees whenever they need a starter.

While Beeter may not get as much of the shine as fellow pitching prospects like Will Warren and Chase Hampton, he looked the part on Thursday night.

Friday’s schedule

Gerrit Cole will make his Grapefruit League debut, starting a 6:35 p.m. game against the Blue Jays at Steinbrenner Field.
