HOUSTON — The Yankees have found their infield insurance.
On the eve of Opening Day, the Yankees are acquiring utility infielder Jon Berti from the Marlins in exchange for outfield prospect John Cruz, The Post’s Jon Heyman confirmed on Wednesday.
Berti, 34, can play third base, second base and shortstop, plus has experience in all three outfield spots.
He hit .294 last season with a .748 OS and 16 steals in 133 games last season.
The Yankees needed someone like Berti with DJ LeMahieu starting the season on the injured list because of a bone bruise on his right foot.
That will likely force Oswaldo Cabrera, who was set to fill a utility role, into action at third base, unless the Yankees use Berti there regularly.
The addition of Berti could bump second baseman/left fielder Jahmai Jones off the roster, unless the Yankees are able to find a trade for third catcher Ben Rortvedt.
Both Jones and Rortvedt are out of minor league options.
Berti, a right-handed hitter, is under contract through 2025.
Cruz is an 18-year-old who spent last season playing for the Yankees’ rookie Florida Complex League team.
