The Giants are turning to Tommy DeVito instead of Drew Lock with Daniel Jones’ Giants career likely over after being benched coming out of the team’s Week 11 bye.
The Post’s Paul Schwartz explained that the Giants are taking the long-term view with this move since Lock will almost certainly not be on the roster next season.
“Tommy DeVito will be an (exclusive) rights free agent in 2025 – he could be a backup or the bridge starter,” Schwartz posted on X. “Starting DeVito now is about finding that out.”
The Giants’ season is all but over at 2-8 and the franchise will likely use these next seven games determining who can be part of the 2025 team.
Lock signed a one-year, $5 million contract during the offseason that, in theory, set him up to replace Jones or fill in if he suffered an injury.
With Jones staying upright and the Giants waiting until Week 12 to make the move, there’s seemingly little incentive for the Giants to use Lock when they potentially have a cheap alternative on the roster.
It also didn’t help that Lock sustained an injury during preseason which limited the Giants’ chance to evaluate him, per Schwartz.
DeVito, the fan favorite who played for Don Bosco (N.J.) and Syracuse, flashed potential last season while starting six games after Jones and Tyrod Taylor both got hurt.
The Giants went 3-3 in his starts, with DeVito ironically playing a large role in why the franchise did not land Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye in the 2024 NFL Draft due to those added wins.
He threw for 1,101 yards and eight touchdowns across his nine games, along with three interceptions.
If DeVito shows he’s a capable quarterback, the Giants potentially have a cheap backup or starter on their roster for 2025 or even a trade chip.
His first 2024 start will come against the Buccaneers on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.
“I feel good about it,” DeVito told The Post recently about his chances of starting again. “My mindset, my work ethic, the way I’m going to keep progressing as time goes on, it’s only going to make me better.”
He added: “You stay the course because you don’t know when your name is going to be called. Same as last year, but a little different because I didn’t know I was going to play. I went through that last year so now I know it’s a real thing. I’ll keep my head down and when the opportunity is there, make the most of it.”
