Whoopi Goldberg is remaining optimistic after the results of the recent Iowa Caucus. The View co-host and her fellow panelists reacted with dismay over Donald Trump‘s victory, but Goldberg was quick to remind everyone that Election Day is still far off, and plenty can change before then.
The first Hot Topic of the day was dominated by Trump’s landslide win after he secured a 30-point win despite harsh weather conditions and his ongoing legal troubles.
“This seems par for the course,” Goldberg said of Monday’s (Jan. 15) caucus results. “You know, it’s early days and none of us are going to know what happens until it happens.”
“So don’t get suckered,” she continued as Joy Behar chimed in, “Don’t get complacent!”
Goldberg repeated, “Don’t get suckered,” before adding, “This is yours. This belongs to the United States of America, all the people sitting here and at home, this is your election. We can’t tell you who to vote for, we’re just telling you what we’re seeing. Keep that in mind.”
Earlier in the episode, native Iowan Sara Haines told the panel that Trump’s victory is less significant that it’s been made out to be. Pointing out that “only five percent of the population of the state caucuses,” Haines argued, “it’s important to know those numbers when you’re reading headlines, because those headlines don’t give you context.”
Behar, meanwhile, reminded The View of some of Trump’s recent transgressions, including his ongoing defamation trial with E. Jean Carroll — who accused the one-term POTUS of raping her — and his encouragement of Iowa voters to risk their lives to get to the polls.
She later blasted Trump as a “dictator wannabe.”
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
