Weekend Media Wrap, Vol. 36: What You Missed If You Weren’t Glued To The Sunday Shows

Every Sunday morning, legacy media outlets are taken over by elected officials, aspiring elected officials, administration insiders, and the usual collection of talking heads — all of whom are there to discuss specific policies, push talking points, or simply promote their own campaigns.

For those who don’t spend their Sunday mornings glued to the television — and their Sunday afternoons attempting to unravel a full week’s worth of network and cable news media spin — The Daily Wire has compiled a short summary of what you may have missed.

ABC News, “This Week”:

Former interim Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Donna Brazile echoed former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki in voicing concerns about the potential impact of third-party candidates on the 2024 presidential election — and, specifically, President Joe Biden’s reelection chances.

Brazile warned on ABC’s “This Week” that third-party candidates like independent presidential hopeful Robert F. Kennedy Jr. or anyone the more moderate No Labels group could put forward might be able to draw votes away from an increasingly unpopular President Biden.

Vice President Kamala Harris also sat for an interview that aired on Sunday morning, and she was asked to weigh in on the ongoing war between Israel and the terror group Hamas, which is currently playing out in Gaza.

When asked whether the United States was prepared to move forward with “consequences” for Israel if a planned offensive in Rafah is carried out — on offensive that Prime Minister Netanyahu has warned would not be derailed even by pressure from the Biden administration — Harris was noncommittal: “I am ruling out nothing.”

CBS News, “Face the Nation”:

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) joined host Margaret Brennan on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” where he addressed the continuing fallout from the Biden administration’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan.

McCaul said that he had made it a priority to ensure that the most recent government funding bill included provisions for special visas for the Afghan nationals who had helped the U.S.: “We left them behind and that was the biggest sin of the Afghan evacuation.”

Also featured on “Face the Nation” was in an interview with Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens, who made it clear that the chaos at the U.S.-Mexico border is an ongoing “national security threat.”

Given the number of illegal immigrants who have entered the United States since President Biden took office — and immediately removed the majority of former President Donald Trump’s border security measures — Owens said, “What’s keeping me up at night is the 140,000 known” illegal immigrants who have made it into the United States in fiscal year 2024 alone.

CNN, “State of the Union”:

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) joined CNN’s “State of the Union,” where she told anchor Jake Tapper that she believed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza — stemming from the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas — had reached the level of “genocide.”

“I believe we have crossed the threshold of intent,” the New York Congresswoman claimed, defending her floor speech calling on President Biden to cut off any additional military aid to Israel.

NBC News, “Meet the Press”:

On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” anchor Kristen Welker sat down with retired Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, where they discussed the 2022 decision that overturned the 1973 landmark abortion case Roe v. Wade. Breyer weighed in on the early decision draft, saying that he did have a theory about who might have leaked it: “I’d be amazed if it was a judge.”

Breyer also said that he had always thought there would be a way to find a compromise on the issue, adding, “I always think it’s possible usually up to the last minute.”

FOX, “Fox News Sunday”:

“Fox News Sunday” anchor Shannon Bream highlighted President Joe Biden’s campaign and its focus on the Affordable Care Act and new EPA emission standards. Biden — with former President Barack Obama’s help — has campaigned on preserving the ACA, and just last week announced new EPA standards.

“For light-duty vehicles, EPA is proposing standards that would increase in stringency each year over a six-year period, from MYs 2027–2032,” the EPA stated. “The proposed standards are projected to result in an industry-wide average target for the light-duty fleet of 82 grams/mile (g/mile) of CO2 in MY 2032, representing a 56 percent reduction in projected fleet average GHG emissions target levels from the existing MY 2026 standards.”

MSNBC, “Inside With Jen Psaki”:

Former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki spoke with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) about the dwindling Republican majority in the House — and a potential shake-up in Republican leadership — and the two appeared to conclude that it would not be long before House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries was handed the gavel.

“Could you see a scenario where Democrats take the majority even before Election Day?” Psaki asked.

“Hakeem will be next and soon, now, that could happen,” Pelosi replied. “But the fact is, the disrespect for the institution with these motions to vacate, the disrespect for the Republicans in the Congress with the departure of these Republicans takes them to a precarious place. But I remind that I at the end only had a margin of two because of one thing and another when we had the majority, and we still got our work done. We passed a record — historic agenda under the leadership of President Biden, and working with the House and the Senate in a very, shall we say, respectful and collaborative way.”
