WABC AM radio prez talks industry’s big boom, says digital ‘wearing off’

Dialing in on dollars

Chad Lopez. A VIP. The president of WABC’s AM news talk radio. So where’d the name Chad come from?

“My mother loved this one soap opera. Actor Chad Everett was on it. So I got named Chad. I was born in a New York hospital, lived in Queens, went to all boys Holy Cross HS, college, then the Navy and into the media after that.”

John and Margo Catsimatidis bought this station when it wasn’t exactly high-end. It’s now a big success. Why suddenly is radio blooming?

“Once the new shiny thing was digital. Big brands leaped to advertise and it exploded. But that’s wearing off. Broadcasting went to the wayside because all was too much to manage but not sustainable without traditional media, which just needed to shine up a bit. Phones and radio, a one-to-one connection, it’s theater of the mind.

“Streaming also popularizes radio because phones stream these shows. There’s 173 countries streaming us right now. Some don’t allow our content in at all. But we’re in 149.”

OK. Another thing. You did years in the Navy, can you explain that huge ship crashing into the bridge?

“I don’t understand it. Tugboats surround it. It didn’t just float in on its own. If power’s lost, weren’t tugboats alerted immediately so they could’ve stopped that ship drifting?

“Somehow I don’t understand how a ship leaving port loses power. Little suspicious to me.”

Police: Rats get munchies, too

AMERICA going to the dogs? Forget it. It’s now going to the rats.

New Orleans cops complain they can’t stop those creatures who’ve taken over the police’s Evidence Room.

Seems these rats (the four-legged kind) are eating all the marijuana that’s being held because of certain other rats (the two-legged kind) who in our Sweet Land of Liberty are also addicted.

Flex appeal

THROUGH research, several divorces and one or two still employed lawyers, plus bodies that have been in the gym, experts tell me there exists now a table of calories involved in the act of Doing It:

Undressing her: Six calories. Minus her consent — 176 calories. Begging — 567. Afterward: hugging — 18 calories. Man leaving immediately — 36 calories. Man explaining why he’s leaving immediately — 8,150 calories.

If there’s anything else you out there can think of, just add it on.

TODAY’S terrorism scares, flight problems and international hostilities make us all so fearful that it’s putting airlines out of business. To attract passengers, airlines will now have marshals aboard, locked cockpit doors — and they’ll stop serving inflight meals.

Mostly out of New York, kids, mostly out of New York.
