U.S. Border Patrol agents reportedly came under fire this week while working on the southern border from gunmen operating inside Mexico.
Fox News correspondent Griff Jenkins said that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed the Wednesday incident to the network.
The shots fired at Border Patrol agents from the Mexican side happened in the Ysleta area of the El Paso Sector, Jenkins posted on X. The incident, which did not yield any casualties, happened in the afternoon.
Federal law enforcement officials launched an investigation into the matter and described the incident as a “use of force” incident, meaning that Border Patrol agents returned fire.
“On May 8, 2024, Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Paso Sector were involved in a use of force incident while responding to reports of shots fired near the border in the Ysleta Station area of responsibility in Texas,” the statement said. “There are no reported injuries at this time. The incident is under review by Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility.”
